Stiff and abrupt characters and emotions

The friendship between Master Chen and his apprentice and the love between Master Chen and his wife played by Liao Fan are all so inexplicable. For example, the friendship between master and apprentice, which led to the final climax, should have been well portrayed, but the emotional interaction between the two was almost zero in the film, and even when the last apprentice died, the tears left by Master seemed so deliberate and unnatural.
