Illustrated version of ancient coin technical terms (5): ground seal, spiral back, back star, back moon, water ripples.

Hello everyone, I am a veteran born in the 1980s and an ancient coin enthusiast. This is the fifth graphic version of ancient coin technical terms that I have compiled and released. If you want to learn more technical terms about ancient coins, you can read the 4 articles I published earlier.

In the previous articles, we mostly talked about some terms on the front of ancient coins, such as: Jie Guo, Si Jue, Gap Wheel...etc. In this article, we will focus on some terms on the backs of ancient coins.

Before explaining some related terms on the back, I think it is necessary to explain: the concept of "land chapter" and "meat".

Di Zhang: The empty part left by ancient coins after excluding (bian Guo, Nei Guo, characters) is called: "Di Zhang", or "meat".

Spin back: There is a spiral pattern on the ground seal on the back of ancient coins, which we call: "Swirl back". To put it simply, it is a circle of deep and shallow marks.

Next we will talk about: star pattern, moon pattern, back star, back moon.

Star pattern: Dot-shaped protrusions like stars appear on the back or surface of the money, which we call "star pattern".

Back Star: If there is a star pattern on the back of an ancient coin, we call it "Back Star"

Moon Pattern: If there is a moon bud-shaped pattern on the back of the coin, we call it "Moon Pattern" .

Back to the moon: If there is a moon pattern on the back of an ancient coin, we call it "back to the moon".

Finally, let’s talk about two special situations: cloud patterns and water ripples.

Moire pattern: If there are cloud-shaped patterns on the back of the money, we call it: "Moiré pattern".

Water ripples: Water ripples appear on the back of the money, which we call: "water ripples".
