What to wear when cycling in northern winter

Cycling in winter, especially in the north, is not an easy task. In addition to snow and freezing roads, which are particularly unsuitable for cycling due to bad weather, months of low temperatures are the biggest challenge to cycling enthusiasts.

You may have had this experience: wearing little clothing and pushing a car out, the cold air that enveloped your whole body immediately discouraged you from leaving. If you bite the bullet, the rest of the trip will basically turn into a painful memory filled with snot and tears; dress warmly and it can handle a 5-10 minute ride. This is generally the best bike to enjoy. In the scene, if the battle line is slightly longer, the pleasure of riding will be immediately wiped out by the heat. What's even more troublesome is that if you start to sweat, you will not only feel cold and hot at the same time, but you may also catch a cold.

When wearing clothes while cycling in winter, finding the right combination of clothing is the most important thing: on the one hand, it is necessary to prevent feeling "cold". It is OK to feel a little cold and uncomfortable, but to feel "frozen to death" "It's too cold" or "It's too cold", then that won't work. On the other hand, to avoid sweating, wear clothes that allow most of the heat to escape and minimize the occurrence of sweating.

Divide the winter in Beijing into three grades according to the temperature: 5 degrees, 0 degrees, and -5 degrees.

When the temperature is about 5 degrees, it is enough to use the basic set. In these temperatures, even wearing a regular cycling hat is still possible to cause sweating. Magic towels can also be a bit warm. However, it is not recommended to take it off. At this temperature, the scalp, ears and neck will feel obviously cold. Wearing a cycling hat and magic towel will significantly improve this feeling. Since winter cycling hats and magic towels are very lightweight, it is recommended to bring a few more when you go out. If you get sweaty on your head or neck, hang the old one on the handlebars and wear a new one.

It is relatively cold around 0 degrees, so you need to add optional options on top of the basic set. First let’s talk about where the warm baby is attached. The warm baby is attached to the lower abdomen, which can significantly increase the temperature of the body and make people feel warm. Another place is attached to the front of the man's lifeline. On the one hand, this is the place facing the wind. On the other hand, this place will not move when riding, and the blood flow is slow. When sitting, there will be a big gap between the cycling pants and underwear, allowing air to leak everywhere. Generally, I will put two layers on. One layer is attached to the inside of the cycling pants, and the other layer is attached to the outside of the underwear. Finally, I attach the baby warmer to the outside of the sock on the instep and cover the toes. There will be no problem if the warm baby lasts for 1-2 hours. If the riding time is expected to be longer, you can bring a backup and replace it on the road.

Secondly, windproof goggles are also very useful equipment. Choose windproof goggles similar to those used for skiing. The Delta goggles I use can very effectively relieve dry eyes and eye pain caused by low temperatures, and It can be put directly on the outside of cycling glasses, let alone ordinary glasses.

For temperatures of -5 degrees and below, my personal experience is that you don’t need to consider cycling equipment. Wear the clothes, shoes, hats, and gloves you would wear in daily outings at this temperature. You can consider wearing goggles to keep warm. The first goal is to ride slowly and dissipate heat properly to avoid sweating too quickly. It is a good choice to carry one or two replacement cycling hats with you to ensure that when your head sweats a lot, you can immediately change into a dry and warm hat to avoid catching a cold.
