Talk about my graded English reading materials (1)

It must be said that the English-speaking world attaches much greater importance to children's enlightenment books than our Chinese system. The existence of many picture books and graded reading materials is proof of this. After all, we have spoken Chinese and studied Chinese for so many years, but we have never heard of graded reading.

In my opinion, there is no concept of graded reading materials in domestic early childhood education. This is probably due to the different characteristics of texts. Chinese is a hieroglyphic script, and there is no difficulty or difficulty between words, just the number of strokes. In the eyes of a child, wood and forest are both words. If you don't say forest, you will call it three wood. Therefore, there is no progression from wood to understanding forest. Therefore, there is no graded reading.

The children read to him "Under the bridge in front of the door, a group of ducks swam by" and "The desert smoke is straight, and the sun sets over the long river". To adults, they are lower-level people and spring snow, but in their eyes The difficulty level is the same. Anyway, they are all words that I don’t understand yet, so I just have to do it one by one.

English is a pinyin text, and many words are composed of root words, which are connected in series with more than 200 commonly used high-frequency words, plus various tenses and rules to follow, and even use natural spelling. I can spell and pronounce most of the vocabulary, so it is possible to progress step by step.

Because I have a baby, I have no problem choosing picture books and graded reading materials. I also have some small experiences. It is also a record to sort them out.

1. Penguin Random Series

I have to say that I am a different person in choosing books. My first graded reading set is not the Oxford Tree, but the Random Series. I had just come into contact with graded readings at that time, and there happened to be an event on my favorite official account, so I immediately bought a set of them. Because there are accompanying audio lessons, it is much more expensive than buying the book alone.

Random Step into Reading is a classic graded book from the famous American publisher Random House. The book is divided into levels 1-5. Currently on the market, most of the books we can buy are level 1-2, with 30 books for each level. I have collected all five sets! This set of books contains a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction topics.

All supporting audio help. Each book is equipped with 5 types of audio, story, chant, song, listen and repeat, and listening test. It is suitable for repeated listening, reading, reading and singing, making children love it every minute. Learn English.

Some of these books are written by picture book experts, such as I like bugs, which is written by Margaret Waits Brown, the author of "The Runaway Bunny", and the familiar "Busy". Scarry, the author of "Busytown" and classic picture books such as "The Snowman".

So this set of books is what I, a non-professional, prefer. Why? Good looks! The Langdon series is not like the Oxford tree, where the painting style is the same without change. The Langdon series is a series of books composed of different stories, different styles, and paintings by different painters, and there are many works by famous artists. The different painting styles give each book a different meaning. It can be said that while the baby is learning English, he has unknowingly improved his art literacy. For example, these are several different styles of paintings.

This Taekwondo book is simply my child’s favorite! She reads it several times a day. When asked what book she wants to read, Tae Kwon Do is almost always the one she chooses. It must be the pictures that attract her!

It pays attention to the sense of rhythm, and most of the books can actually be sung! The disadvantage brought about by this is that the grading standards are not so strict, and there are many rare words for rhyming. For example, there are many words in the first level that I need to check the phonetic symbols for pronunciation. Fortunately, the kids don’t know it anyway, so just read it reluctantly.

The Random series has a relatively high starting point for graded reading. The first level is almost the third level of the Oxford tree. After all, my baby is currently in the interest stage, so I don’t know if it is too high. But there is no doubt that children prefer her painting style.

2. Pearson Early Childhood English (Preparatory Level)

The second set of books is the preparatory level of Pearson Early Childhood English for entry-level students.

This set of books is so cheap. It's a bargain. It's a small book, basically one sentence pattern per book, 6-10 new words, and the painting styles are also different. Especially suitable for entry-level children.

For my two-year-old child, my love for this set of books begins with its appearance. For example, she read the book "Face Painting" to pieces and learned a few vocabulary words. The focus was on face painting, which made me buy face paint and paint her face from time to time.

3. Library Series

The third set to buy is the Library Series. This series is also all-inclusive, with various themes and painting styles, which is still my favorite. It is said that reading the five sets can correspond to the high school level in China. I have already stocked up on the third set, which is enough for my son and I to read for several years.
