Brief introduction of Zhengyangmen Tower

Zhengyangmen, commonly known as Qianmen, Qianmenlouzi and Daqianmen, formerly known as Li Zhengmen, was the south gate of the inner city of Beijing in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Located at the southernmost tip of Tiananmen Square on the north-south central axis of Beijing, south of the memorial hall. Founded in the seventeenth year of Yongle, the Ming emperor, it is one of the nine capital cities in old Beijing. It is a complete ancient defense building system, which integrates Zhengyangmen Gate Tower, Arrow Tower and Golden Pagoda. According to local records, the towers and arrow towers are magnificent in scale, tall in shape, and magnificent, which are the representative works of old Beijing city wall architecture. Now there are only towers and watchtowers, which are the only well-preserved gates in Beijing.

Architectural composition

Zhengyangmen refers to the general name of Zhengyangmen Gate Tower and Arrow Tower. Zhengyangmen Archway, Gatehouse, Wengcheng, Zhengyang Bridge and Wupai Arch are located on the north-south axis of Beijing, which are a group of buildings with reasonable layout, solemn shape and dignified momentum.

Four doors means that Zhengyang Gate has four openings, namely, the doorway of the gatehouse, the doorway of the embrasured watchtower and the doorway of the east and west doors on both sides of the urn, while the other eight doors have only two openings, namely, the doorway of the gatehouse and the doorway of the unilateral door of the urn. The watchtower has no openings, only the function of defending the fortress.
