In ancient times, there was a saying that "go up to Emei and go down to Lingyun". The first sentence refers to Mount Emei, and the second sentence of course refers to the Leshan Giant Buddha.

Speaking of Leshan, people can’t help but think of the Leshan Giant Buddha. Yes, it is this thousand-year-old Buddha that makes Leshan famous far and near. tourist city.

The Leshan Giant Buddha is located in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, at the confluence of the Min River, Qingyi River and Dadu River, facing Leshan City across the river. The Leshan Giant Buddha is carved on the rock wall at the confluence of the Minjiang River, Qingyi River and Dadu River. It is carved on the riverside cliff of Qixia Peak in Lingyun Mountain on the south bank of the Minjiang River. It is also known as the "Lingyun Giant Buddha". It is a seated statue of Maitreya Buddha and the first model of Moyan statues in the Tang Dynasty. One of the masterpieces of art is the world's largest stone sculpture of seated Maitreya Buddha.

According to legend, the Buddha statue was excavated in the early years of the founding of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (713 AD). The person who initiated the construction of the Buddha was Master Haitong, a monk in the Tang Dynasty. In ancient times, the confluence of three rivers in Leshan was the Minjiang River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River. Gathering at the foothills of Lingyun Mountain, the water is quite ferocious, and boats are often overturned at this point. There are widespread rumors that evil dragons are causing trouble here. In order to ensure the safety of passing ships and suppress evil dragons, Master Haitong determined to dig a giant statue of Maitreya Buddha on the cliff to save all sentient beings. He collected funds extensively and traveled all over the world, covering all areas of Jianghu and Huaihai. After all the hard work to collect the funds to start the project, greedy county officials came to extort money, intending to take it for themselves. When faced with corrupt officials, Haitong acted with awe-inspiring righteousness: "One's own eyes can be cut out, but Buddha's wealth is rare." The cruel officials thought that Haitong was just talking, and after repeated pressure, Master Haitong bravely gouged out his own eyes with a knife - "make his own eyes and hold them in a plate." The thrilling scene a thousand years ago is still shocking and thought-provoking. This spirit of dedication and sacrifice for ideals is worth learning from future generations. After Haitong's death, Haitong's disciples took over the construction. It was not completed until the 19th year of Zhenyuan (803 AD) of Emperor Dezong of the Tang Dynasty, which lasted 90 years. It is praised by poets as "the mountain is a Buddha, and the Buddha is a mountain."

To get to the side and feet of the Giant Buddha and see the majestic appearance of the Buddha up close, tourists must pass through the "Nine-curved Plank Road" excavated in the Tang Dynasty. On the right side of the Buddha is the "Nine-curved Plank Road" that existed in ancient times and was renovated by later generations. The path is winding and spiraling down. Old and young people must pay special attention to safety; on the left side of the Big Buddha, later generations dug through the rock wall and used it to face the river. The "Lingyun Plank Road" built with steel bars and other materials runs through mountains and rivers, with winding paths leading to secluded areas, making it uniquely interesting. The rock wall on the side of the "Lingyun Plank Road" is engraved with inscriptions by contemporary celebrities such as Zhang Aiping and Ma Shitu.
