Of the three types of sketching, drawing, and gouache, what should you learn first, what should you learn next, and what should you learn last? Which one has the best painting effect?
Let me tell you about my experience. I learned sketching first and then gouache. I didn’t learn sketching but I became good at it as I grew up. I studied sketching for nearly five or six years, and then gouache for one and a half years. I started learning in the second grade of elementary school. I spent nearly a year on plaster, nearly three years on still life, and then a little more than half a year on plaster portraits, and the remaining time on real people. Later I learned gouache. It ended in the second grade of junior high school.
The age of learning painting is very delicate. If you are young, you need to study for a few more years to lay the foundation. There is a big difference between having a good foundation and rushing forward. For example, some children are not smart but have a good foundation. What comes out is comparable to what is in the book, but the structure is not actually cleared. Of course this depends on what your purpose is. If you are older, you will be more comfortable with the pen and will not be confused easily.
Sketch is mature and there is no problem with any type of painting. I learned it when I was young, so I don’t know what it would be like to learn it when I am older. It depends on the individual’s nature. Anyway, I still recommend learning sketching first.
I personally feel that there are serious differences in the mainstream painting methods of gouache. The teaching in different places is different, or people with mature painting skills have their own methods of painting gouache. For example, what we have here is painted over, similar to realistic oil painting. (Then when I paint gouache, I usually use the water painting method. I grind it slowly... The effect is very good, but it doesn't seem to be a mainstream painting method. It depends on the purpose of painting. I personally don't like the kind where the color blocks are obviously prominent.) Gouache, It’s better to draw based on the mature sketching basics. However, it is quite difficult to express the texture of that kind of thing with gouache, although it is not impossible, and it is not commonly tested in mainstream exams. The most important thing in sketching is to practice how to draw the texture of things.
I have never learned sketching. Read more caricatures. The kind of old cartoons with exaggerated lines depicting characters’ facial features, which can expose people’s facial features. Most of the old comics from the last century are in this style. Look at more realistic ones with ugly characters. Then it's almost done. In fact, read more Baoman comics... ...
