Liuyang, a county-level city in Hunan Province, is administered by Changsha City. It is named because the county seat is located in the north (yang side) of Liushui. Historical evolution of Liuyang:
Liuyang belonged to Jingzhou among the nine states in ancient times, to Chu State during the Warring States Period, and to Linxiang County during the Qin and Han Dynasties. In the 14th year of Jian'an in the Eastern Han Dynasty (209), Liuyang County was established in Linxiang County, one of the four stipend towns of Zhou Yu. In the 3rd year of Daye in the Sui Dynasty (607), Changsha County was established. In the 2nd year of Tang Jinglong (708), Liuyang County was reestablished. . In the first year of Yuanzhen (1295), it was promoted to Liuyang Prefecture, and in the second year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1369), it was demoted to a county.
In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it belonged to Changsha Prefecture. In 1912, it belonged to Changbao Road. In 1914, it was renamed Xiangjiang Road. Since 1926, it has been under the First Administrative Supervision District. On July 19, 1949, Liuyang was liberated. August belongs to Changsha area. From September 1952 to February 1968, it was changed to Xiangtan District. In January 1968, the prefecture was renamed as a region, but Liuyang's affiliation remained unchanged.
In February 1983, the State Council abolished the Xiangtan area and Liuyang County was placed under the jurisdiction of Changsha City. In January 1993, the Ministry of Civil Affairs issued a notice, with the approval of the State Council, agreeing to remove Liuyang from the county and establish a city (county level).
