1. Spring Festival couplets. I have mentioned it before, for example:

4. Longevity couplet. Couplets sent to congratulate others on their birthday are called birthday couplets. For example:

Blessings are like the East China Sea;

Shou is as long as the Nanshan Mountain.

5. Elegiac couplet. Couplets written in memory of the deceased are called elegiac couplets and funeral couplets. For example, there is an elegiac couplet in memory of Prime Minister Zhou Enlai:

To commemorate the Prime Minister’s inheritance of revolutionary ambition; to raise the red flag and sweep away the harmful insects!

6. Couplets and couplets of places of interest. Couplets hung on pillars of palaces, residences or buildings are called couplets [湹yíng, pillars]. In the past, couplets were often called couplets. For example, there is a couplet on the Canglang Pavilion of Daming Lake in Jinan:

Surrounded by lotus and three by willows; one city is surrounded by mountains and half is a lake.

The couplets written on places of interest are called couplets of places of interest. The Canglang Pavilion couplet above is also a couplet of places of interest.

7. Gift couplets and self-encouragement couplets. Those given to friends are called gift couplets, and those written to oneself are called self-encouragement couplets. Revolutionary old man Xu Teli wrote a couplet as early as 1938 and gave it to a young clerk in a store:

Read books about your family and country often; do nothing that is not beneficial to your body and mind.

The famous educator Tao Xingzhi wrote a self-encouragement couplet to express his determination to dedicate himself to the education of the motherland:

Come with a heart in hand; do not bring any grass. go.

8. Industry alliance. Three hundred and sixty businesses, such as teahouses, restaurants, drug stores, grain stores, etc., all have their own industry associations.

9. Oral couplets. The couplets that some literati and scholars usually make verbally by asking and answering questions are called oral couplets. Many of the couplets introduced in our book are oral couplets.

From an artistic point of view, there are palindrome couplets, embedded [qiàn] word couplets, homophonic double associations, overlapping word couplets, combined word couplets, split word couplets, number couplets, directional couplets, metaphorical couplets, etc. wait. We will talk about the various couplets mentioned above in detail in the story that follows.

There are other ways to classify the types of couplets.

Couplets are so widely used and have a large capacity - just a few dozen words can contain a lot of content. Therefore, in various historical periods from the Song Dynasty to the present, many people love to write couplets and antithetical couplets, leaving many interesting couplet stories.

4. The "good stories" in the couplets The so-called "good stories" refer to good or interesting things that have been spread for a while.

The number of couplets is large, there are many authors, and the content is wide. There are no fewer than hundreds of thousands of couplets from ancient times to the present, covering all aspects of characters, events, politics, military, culture, and art in different historical periods. If we were to write them all, there would be too many. In this book, we have selected about 400 meaningful, representative, and quite interesting couplets, compiled them into 200 stories, and introduced them to everyone. These two hundred stories not only introduce you to some knowledge about couplets, but also introduce relevant historical figures, political events, and other knowledge. It can be said that our book is neither a literary knowledge book about couplets nor a book about couplets. It is a book of historical knowledge.

These two hundred couplet stories are arranged according to the life era of the couplet author, that is, in historical order. There are stories about using couplets as weapons to fight against reactionary rulers; there are stories that satirize and ridicule bad people, bad things, and ugly phenomena in society; there are stories that show the intelligence of people, especially children; there are also some stories A humorous couplet story. Some of these couplets are of high artistic quality and have been widely circulated and are worthy of appreciation. Reading such couplets is a beautiful enjoyment.
