Water lily is a perennial floating-leaf aquatic herbaceous plant. It likes strong light and well-ventilated environment. Generally, its growth conditions cannot be met indoors, so it is not suitable for home potted plants. It is mainly suitable for growing in still water bodies such as ponds and lakes; it is a common cultivated plant in river ponds.

Water lilies are mainly divided into cold-tolerant species and cold-intolerant species. Cold-tolerant species are usually propagated by rhizomes (lotus roots) in March to April before germination in early spring; the optimum water depth is 25-30cm, and the deepest should not exceed 100cm; they like loam rich in organic matter.

Generally, leaves sprout from late March to April, and bloom one after another from May to August, with each flower blooming for 2 to 5 days. Fruits after flowering. Stems and leaves wither from October to November. It sprouted again the following spring. It mainly grows in ponds, rivers and lakes, and is often found wild or cultivated.
