How to prune figs if they want to be sweet and big?
Beginning of spring is the first of the 24 solar terms in a year, which means the end of winter and the beginning of spring, and it is also a symbol of the beginning of the recovery of all things. Therefore, there are still ten days before beginning of spring, so the love flowers in the homes of flower lovers in the south and the north need final pruning. What we talked about most before was the pruning of roses, which should be finished before beginning of spring at the latest.
A few days ago, a flower friend asked Hua's potted figs if they should be pruned. The answer is yes! Today we are going to talk about how to prune figs.
The germination ability of fig is still relatively strong, and it is also very resistant to pruning. And figs grow very fast. In particular, potted flower lovers should pay attention to shaping and controlling the height of plants. After all, the space of potted plants is limited, and the nutrients are definitely worse than those planted in the ground, so don't grow too tall.
In general, figs are pruned mainly in winter, spring and Xia San, and summer is the peak season for fig growth. Pruning is mainly aimed at topping and coring individual branches that grow too fast to avoid flourishing branches.
Pruning figs mainly emphasizes three points.
Today we will focus on winter and spring pruning. Hua Niang thinks that pruning figs has three main points.
First, trim the dead branches.
First, some dead branches and diseased branches on the plant should be pruned together. Pay attention to the pruning of such branches must be basically cut off. If you keep these dead branches, it will only do no harm to plants, but it is easy to infect trunks in winter and spring.
Second, trim off the redundant branches that are too dense, leaving the weak and strong!
It's important for figs to bear more fruits, but it's also important to keep fruits and grow in the later stage. In order to make every fruit grow healthily, sunshine is indispensable. But figs have large leaves. If the branches are dense, the light transmittance of the whole plant will be poor and the nutrients will be dispersed, so the branches should not be too dense or too many. Pruning should pay attention to the principle of removing the weak and retaining the strong, trim off some weak branches and crosspieces, and concentrate on supplying nutrients.
However, when pruning weak branches, they should not cling to the trunk scissors like dead branches, but form a pitch angle with the trunk. First, they should prevent nutrient loss. The second is to prevent frostbitten branches from being infected with the main branch pathogen during the frost period.
In addition, when pruning, we should consider modeling according to the light transmittance of plants. Generally, the most commonly used pruning shape is "X" shape or sika deer horn shape, that is, it is best to keep the upright branches and cut off the weaker branches.
This is the same as what we often say about pulling branches horizontally. Why do vines and roses bloom more horizontally? Because the branches are in the shape of the sky. First of all, it breaks the top advantage of plants. Second, every bud on the branch can receive the best light after being pulled horizontally, and naturally more flowers will bloom.
The upright branches are the most shaded, especially some branches facing south, so figs are at their best like the horns of sika deer. If your fig doesn't branch up like this at present, it doesn't matter! Then you have to cut off the weak branches directly, leaving a few strong branches, and then pull the main branch and the extended branches on the post behind horizontally after pruning.
Third, figs in these two cases must not be cut short and then cut!
The pruning degree of figs depends on varieties and seedling conditions of plants. First, for early-maturing varieties, such as Xia Guo-based varieties, because the fruit on the new shoot of the terminal bud matures early, the fruit will be larger, so generally do not cut it short or cut it again, otherwise it will affect the yield, just trim some branches that affect the light;
Secondly, the seedlings that have just been cut or grafted in those years are petite and should be trimmed lightly. Finally, it should be noted that in order to avoid wound infection, after each pruning, a callus antiseptic film can be applied to the wound, which can protect the growth of wound healing tissue, prevent the infection of rotting virus, prevent frostbite and dry wound.
