How to read Oxalis, Oxalis cultivation techniques

Oxalis rubra (sound cu, same as vinegar), also known as Oxalis macrophylla and Oxalis purpurea, is a perennial herb native to Oxalis in South America. There is no aboveground stem, there are spherical bulbs in the underground part and brown membrane in the outer layer; Leaves are basal and hairy; Leaflets 3, oblate and obcordate; Stipules oblong, narrow apex, connate with petiole base; A dichotomous cyme with lavender to purplish red petals.

Oxalis purpurea has the characteristics of bright color, long flowering period and fast growth. It is widely cultivated in China. Because of its strong reproductive ability, it fled to the wild in the south of China and became a weed. Oxalis rubra belongs to many flower types and is very drought-tolerant.

Planting process

Remove the seedlings from the nursery and transplant them.

Dig out the whole old seedling with a shovel, gently pat off the soil around the root system and pile it up. When digging seedlings, stay away from the plant a little bit, so as not to accidentally hurt the bulbs, and pay attention to the shovel to dig straight down, and don't dig sideways and hurt the bulbs.

Factory division

In order to reduce transpiration and water loss after planting, the dead leaves and about 1/2 old leaves of Oxalis rubra were removed. Cut off the old bulb at the lower part with a sharp knife, and the incision position should be below the first or second new bulb at the upper part, so that the old bulb at the lower part can be removed and rejuvenated after 1~2 new bulbs are planted; It can also ensure that new plants have enough nutrients and germinate and bloom quickly. Finally, dip fresh plant ash into the cut new bulb wound to prevent the wound from rotting.

Fertilize soil or land

Apply more organic fertilizer in the flower bed where the old seedlings have been removed, dig deep and rake off dead leaves and weeds. Generally, 0.5~0.8 kg/m2 of decomposed cake fertilizer is applied, and appropriate amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is applied to ensure the flowering needs of oxalis purpurea.

plant

Oxalis purpurea grows rapidly, and each plant can reproduce 3~9 seedlings in that year. Needle holes are generally used for planting, and the spacing between plants is 25×35 cm. Dig 8~ 10 cm deep pits with a small shovel, put 4~6 plants in each pit according to the bulb size, and cover with soil for 3~4 cm, paying attention to exposing the leaves from the soil surface. Of course, furrow planting is also acceptable. The plant spacing is generally 15~30 cm. Water after planting for 2~3 days to prevent bulbs from rotting.

Oxalis rubra is easy to survive, has strong growth potential and long flowering period, and is deeply loved by people. However, due to the extensive daily management, there has been a phenomenon of only planting regardless in many areas. Oxalis purpurea, which has been growing for many years, is crowded with each other, the root system moves up, the ability of absorbing fertilizer and water is weakened, the growth is weakened year by year, the flowering amount is less, the flowering period is shortened, and the dead spots in serious places affect the ornamental value. Strengthening the daily maintenance and management of oxalis purpurea can also effectively delay its aging phenomenon. The flowering period of oxalis purpurea is more than 5 months, and it needs a lot of fertilizer and water during the growing period, so it should be fertilized and watered in time during the growing period. Before oxalis returns to green in spring, apply compound fertilizer 15 ~ 20kg per mu, which can be applied at points according to soil moisture or combined with water spraying. After that, apply fertilizer every 20 days except the dormant period, and pay attention to pest control. When the temperature rises in July and August in summer, oxalis purpurea is forced to enter a dormant state and basically stops growing. In order to prevent the new stems exposed to the soil surface from being sunburned, the soil should be covered. The thickness of covering soil should be determined according to the height of the new stem that moves upward every year, and it is generally suitable to be 2~3 cm. Oxalis rubra is native to Brazil and likes humid environment. It needs sandy loam with good drainage and much humus. Not cold-tolerant, in colder areas, it can only be cultivated in greenhouse.
