I'm talking to the giant.

Newton's most famous sentence is: "If I see farther, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants". This sentence is usually used to praise Newton's humility, but historically, this sentence itself seems to have no reason to be understood as humility. First of all, this sentence is not original. As early as the12nd century, BernatdofChartres, a medieval philosopher and president of the famous French school of chartres, said, "Nosse seau as naosgigingtinhumerinistins". This Latin word means that we are all like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. This sentence can still be found in the windows of the famous Gothic Cathedral in chartres. Starting from Bernard, at least twenty or thirty people said something similar before Newton. Newton said this in a letter to Hook in 1676. At that time, he had been arguing with Hooke about light, which had been going on for many years (see our historical story). In this letter, Newton thought that Hooke attached too much importance to his (Newton's) ability, and then came up with this famous saying: "If I see farther, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants." From the context, this is an obvious compromise: I didn't copy your idea, I just continued to develop on the basis of your work-this is just a little higher than you. Newton tried to calm Hooke's anger gently in this way, and everyone stopped there. But if you want to say generosity or humility, it seems difficult to say it. Newton hated Hook all his life. Even decades later, Hooke's grave has been arched, but he still can't calm down.
