Why are some strawberries hollow?
According to local strawberry growers, there are many reasons for strawberry hollowing, which are related to insufficient temperature, light, humidity, water and nutrition, and may be caused by the application of growth hormone or excessive maturity. It may also be related to varieties. The following two sisters will analyze it in detail:
(A) the impact of low temperature
Low temperature occurs during fruit-setting period, which affects growth and slow development. After the temperature rises in the later period, the growth is accelerated, and the uneven development before and after will produce cracks and cavities. If strawberries are planted in winter, a large number of hollow fruits will appear.
(2) High temperature and weak light
Poor illumination during flowering, or continuous high temperature exceeding 35 degrees will affect flowering and flower development. If it encounters rain again, it will directly lead to the loss of vitality of some pollen, poor pollination and fertilization, poor fruit growth and a high probability of hollow fruit.
(3) The harvest is too late
Strawberries grow very quickly when they are ripe, so they should be picked when they turn from green to red. Plant growth is weak or too late after harvest, nutrition, fertilizer and water supply are insufficient or continue to grow without harvest, and aging, water loss and nutrient consumption will form cavities.
(4) Lack of fertilizer and water:
After a large number of strawberries bear fruit, plants consume too much nutrition, so topdressing should be done in time to promote fruit development and the occurrence of new roots and leaves. In the fruit-setting stage, if boron is lacking, nutrients cannot be transported to the fruit in time. Without nutrition, the fruit can't grow normally, which will lead to hollow fruit. Strawberries need a lot of water, especially during flowering and berry ripening. If the water is insufficient, the fruit will become smaller, the quality will decline, and there may be hollowness.
(5) Influence of expansive agent and variety
Strawberries are not easy to preserve. In order to preserve them for a longer time after picking, fruit farmers often pick strawberries when they are six or seven minutes ripe. There are also some fruit farmers who will give strawberries swelling agents in order to make them grow fast and look good. When strawberries grow rapidly, the center will be empty.
(6) Variety relationship
Strawberries such as sweet Charlie and lucky incense have a soft taste. Because the pulp density is relatively small, the middle of the fruit is loose, and a small cavity may be formed. Therefore, strawberries of this kind are prone to hollow strawberries.
