The story of orchids

during the southern tour of Zhengde (156-1522) in the Ming Dynasty, the emperor heard that rare orchids were produced on Lanyin Mountain in Lanxi, Zhejiang Province, so he came to Lanxi and wanted to select some treasures to bring back to the palace. The monk in charge of Lanyin Temple on Lanyin Mountain has a rare plum petal orchid, which is full of charm, beautiful color and extraordinary fragrance. After the host learned that the emperor was going up the mountain to look for orchids, he told his disciples to dig it up from the soil and plant it in a small incense burner so that the orchid would not be chosen by the emperor. Then tie a small incense burner with a long rope and hang it down to a deep well in the mountain. The host thinks this orchid is foolproof.

The emperor has gone up the mountain and entered the temple, and the host hurried forward to welcome him. After resting in the temple for a while, the emperor ordered his attendants to choose and dig orchids. They dug up several plants, but none of them were to the emperor's liking. At this time, a delicate fragrance of orchids floated in, and the emperor ordered his courtiers to look for orchids with delicate fragrance. The courtiers followed the fragrance and found the ancient well where Mei Lan was hidden. Seeing a piece of rope exposed outside the well, a courtier pulled the rope up and pulled it out of the small incense burner. The fragrance came from the small incense burner, but the orchids in the small incense burner disappeared, so the courtiers took the small incense burner back to me. The emperor studied the small incense burner over and over again, but he couldn't see anything strange except the delicate fragrance. Then Xuan came to preside over and questioned the details of this incense burner. The host monk prevaricated: it can make people's eyes bright to drink spring water from the well with this small incense burner. After hearing this, the emperor immediately ordered the chamberlain to go to the well to bring back the spring water of a censer, took the lead in drinking it, and asked the courtiers to drink it. The spring water is cool and refreshing. When you take a sip for the first time, people really have the feeling of clearing their hearts and improving their eyesight.

Because this ancient well gives off a strange fragrance, drinking the spring water from the well will make people clear their minds and eyes. The emperor said happily, "Strange! Strange! " And life in waits to Four Treasures of the Study, ready to inscribe "deep in the shade of orchid with extraordinary fragrance" seven words, but just write down "deep in the shade of orchid" four words, suddenly feel dizzy, abdominal pain. All the courtiers also bent down with laughter, complaining.

It turns out that everyone was sweating profusely when they went up the mountain, and soon they drank well water, and the cold and heat collided, thus causing abdominal pain. The emperor didn't want to write any more, so he had to sign the bill hastily and hurried down the mountain. Up to now, there are still stone carvings on the cliff of Lanyin Mountain: Imperial Title, Deep in Lanyin, May 16th, 14th year of Zhengde.

after the emperor left, the host was glad that the precious Mei Lan had not been searched, so he went to the well with his disciples to salvage it, but the Mei Lan had disappeared without a trace and disappeared.
