The scale on the map indicates the extent to which the distance on the map is smaller than the actual distance, so it is also called scaling down.

Expressed as: scale = distance on the map/actual distance. There are usually three ways to express scale.

(1) numerical value, indicating the number of decimal places of a proportion or fraction. For example, 1 cm on the map represents the field distance of 500 kilometers, which can be written as:1:50,000,000, or it can be written as: one in 50 million.

(2) Line segment type, draw a line segment on the map and indicate the actual distance represented by 1 cm on the map.

(3) Give priority to words, and directly write in words on the map how many kilometers the site distance is represented by 1 cm on the map. As shown in the figure, 1 cm is equivalent to the ground distance 10 km.

These three representations are interchangeable.

According to the scale of the base map, the field distance between the two places on the map can be measured; According to the actual distance and scale of the two places, the distance between the two places on the map can be calculated; According to the distance on the map and the actual distance, the scale can be calculated.

According to the purpose of the map, the size of the area represented, the size of the map sheet and the details of the content, the scale to be drawn is large or small. The numerator in the map scale is usually 1, and the larger the denominator, the smaller the scale. Usually, a map with a scale greater than 100,000 is called a large-scale map. Maps with a scale of1:200,000 to1:100,000 are called medium-scale maps; A map with a scale less than100000 is called a small-scale map. On the same map, the larger the scale, the smaller the scope of map representation, the more detailed the content of map representation and the higher the accuracy. The smaller the scale, the larger the range represented on the map, the simpler the content reflected and the lower the accuracy. Most of the maps in geography textbooks and atlases used by middle school students belong to small-scale maps.

Map scale

The ratio of the line segment length on the map to the corresponding line segment length in the field. It represents the reduction degree of map graphics, also known as scale reduction. Strictly speaking, only on a large-scale map representing a small area, because the curvature of the earth is not considered, the scale of the whole map is consistent. Usually, the scale marked on the map is called the main scale. On the map, only some lines or points conform to main scale. The scale is related to the details and accuracy of the map content. Generally speaking, large-scale maps have detailed contents and high geometric accuracy, and can be used for drawing. Small-scale maps are universal and not suitable for cartography.

The larger the scale, the longer the actual distance represented by the distance on the map, and the more detailed the things that can be reflected.

Calculation of scaling:
