Details of Yang Jianda
Li Lun, a producer of CCTV, said that when I first listened to this song, I thought it was a bit long at first. At the end of the song, I gradually realized the vastness and realized the 70-year-long length of this song, and I couldn't stop singing it.
70 years ago, it was the most painful time for this nation. The territory fell and the people were displaced. With the outbreak of the Pacific War, the invaders landed from Myanmar and the international aid channel to China was cut off. China's southwest rear area is at stake, and the survival of the nation is at stake.
At this time, Yang Jianda, an overseas Chinese doing cowhide business in India, resolutely joined the Indian troops stationed in China and went to Myanmar to resist Japan. At that time, this song, written after "September 18th" and during the exile of the Northeast Army in Xi 'an, had already spread all over the country, inside and outside the Great Wall.
Yang Jianda's home is in Meixian District, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. 1937, 16-year-old Yang Jianda and his sister went to India to do business. It is far from the occupied land, but not far from the pain and responsibility of this nation. Yang Jianda joined the new 38th Division led by Sun Liren. This team swept all the way, along the newly opened stilwell road, from India to Myanmar, and then joined forces with the expeditionary force that counterattacked in China. After the war, Yang Jianda and many veterans left the army and stayed in Myanmar because they were tired of the war, hoping that one day the country would be peaceful before going home to live. Then the end of another war made it difficult for Yang Jianda to return to China.
The video that made the audience cry was shot in May 2009. At that time, I was organizing a group of Chinese expeditionary veterans living in Myanmar to go home to visit relatives. Yang Jianda said that he broke his leg because of riding a bicycle. "I can't go back." In words, there is helplessness and sadness. Then, Yang Jianda sang this song for us.
The return of veterans living in Myanmar is a public welfare activity called "Veterans Go Home" initiated by me. With the joint efforts of everyone, more than 30 veterans who have lived abroad for about 70 years have met their relatives. Watching the happy scene of veterans reuniting with their families, Yang Jianda's songs will ring in his heart from time to time.
In August this year, the author finally couldn't help calling Yang Jianda, "I'll take you home." Unexpectedly, Yang Jianda agreed without hesitation.
The first time I met Yang Jianda was in early 2008, when I went to Myanmar for the first time to interview veterans of the Chinese Expeditionary Force.
Yang Jianda knows that the author is a Beijing reporter and talks a lot. He brought a copy of Lianhe Zaobao in 2005, which was yellowed, but carefully wrapped in plastic paper. This newspaper survived because the article "Historical Burden and Political Prejudice" mentioned the Chinese Expeditionary Force and the reflection and redemption of the younger generation in China. At the end of the article, we wrote: In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, we saw the warm scene of China leaders visiting veterans of the Eighth Route Army, but if there were veterans of the National Army against Japan at that time, it would definitely make people feel completely warm and sincerely happy.
Yang Jianda had this kind of "joy". On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Embassy presented commemorative medals signed by President Hu Jintao to Myanmar veterans of the Anti-Japanese War. Yang Jianda hid this medal at the bottom of the box. When an outsider comes and sits in a wheelchair, he will ask his daughter Lingling to take out the commemorative medallion, and he will open the package layer by layer like peeling cabbage. When the golden medal shines in front of the guests, the joy on the old man's face will bloom like flowers.
This national honor, which was more than half a century late, brought great satisfaction to Yang Jianda. But obviously, it is difficult to completely erase the pain and loneliness of veterans with this medal alone.
After living in Myanmar for more than 60 years, Yang Jianda has never joined Myanmar. Asked why, he said that when he was in India, an overseas Chinese was killed by local people, and his family found the embassy. When the embassy was preparing to negotiate, it was found that overseas Chinese had joined British nationality, and the matter was finally dropped. "I have joined Myanmar nationality and the state cannot protect me." Yang Jianda said, "I am from China, and I am a soldier in China. One day, I will return to my hometown. "
In fact, the country they protected with their lives has never brought him protection. Because of political and historical reasons, these Burmese veterans had to swallow their words and even dared not speak Chinese for a long time.
In Myanmar, Yang Jianda holds a shabby foreigner's card. He has to pay a certain fee to the local government every year to get the right of abode, which is a bit like the temporary residence permit abolished in China because of Sun Zhigang's case.
Later, when I took Yang Jianda home and applied for a foreigner's pass to visit his hometown in Meizhou, Guangdong, Yang Jianda suddenly said with some sadness: "Myanmar thinks I am from China, and China treats me as a foreigner."
"You say, which country am I from?" Yang Jianda questioned the author.
After living in Myanmar that year, Yang Jianda married a Burmese girl and gave birth to eight children. Like many Burmese veterans, his wife can't speak Chinese, which is why many veterans are very lonely in their later years. When I went to interview the veterans, I found that they were all alone, sitting quietly on the couch in front of their house, expressionless, letting time pass. They will be surprised to see me, a young man from the motherland, and then talk endlessly.
Yang Jianda lives in Myitkyina in northern Myanmar, near Tengchong, Yunnan. He said that accidentally seeing a vehicle with a China license plate on the street would also excite him for half a day.
At Yang Jianda's insistence, her daughter Lingling finally learned a little Chinese. He also taught her to sing On the Songhua River, which he said was the only thing he left for his children.
In fact, in Myanmar, Yang Jianda has never even bought a house. He always felt that when he bought a property, his heart was gone. If his heart is left behind, people can't go back, and the leaves will always return to the roots. During the civil war, he didn't want to go home because he had to fight when he went back; After the civil war, his troops retreated to an island, and he was afraid to go back; After the "Cultural Revolution", I still dare not, because a comrade-in-arms went back and was caught dead. Until one day, his long-awaited political haze finally dissipated, and the brother who killed you shook hands, only to find that his legs and feet were not so flexible.
The inflexibility of legs and feet is not the most fundamental reason. Many veterans living in Myanmar did not go home until their death for fear of being laughed at. Yang Jianda said: "Everyone wants to return home with clothes on. The veterans in Myanmar are very poor and can't return to their hometowns, but we must go back with dignity because we are anti-Japanese heroes. "
However, for a long time, no one thought they were heroes.
After living in Myanmar for more than half a century, Yang Jianda had a small business, worked in wineries and shipping companies, and was requisitioned by the Myanmar government as a groom. Lingling said that her father told her about the war when she was very young. "He gets up early every day, the quilt is neatly folded, and he has always maintained the temperament of a soldier."
In fact, what impressed Lingling most was that her father told him about his hometown, "What's the house like? The yard is full of longan trees, where is the place to raise pigs? " Lingling followed her father and learned to cook pickles and braised pork, an authentic Hakka dish.
Therefore, when Lingling finally returned to her hometown in Meizhou, Guangdong with her father on September 3 this year, Lingling didn't feel strange. "This is a place that has appeared countless times in her dreams, just as her father described it."
I have heard Yang Jianda sing the song "On the Songhua River" three times before and after, and that widely circulated video is the first time. In March this year, I went to Myanmar to give living expenses to veterans. I took a video camera with me when I went, hoping to record another video of him singing. The result is disappointing, perhaps because of physical reasons, it is difficult for people to feel the imposing manner of a soldier and the sadness of living in a foreign country.
The last time I heard him sing was when I returned to China in September this year. A reporter interviewed him. Yang Jianda offered to sing this song, but after several attempts, he couldn't sing it completely. When this song came to an abrupt end again and again because of severe asthma or forgetting words, the author saw a trace of unspeakable desolation from his face.
In fact, on the first day of entry from Tengchong, Yunnan, Yang Jianda was taken to Tengchong County People's Hospital overnight by ambulance because of fever. Later, when I arrived at Shenzhen airport, the blood pressure of the old man suddenly rose again. On the second day after returning to his hometown in Meizhou, the old man was admitted to the hospital again. In that hospitalization, Yang Jianda was diagnosed with advanced esophageal cancer.
The situation of the elderly makes the volunteers very worried. What should I do if there is an accident? I even regret taking such a big risk to take him home. But thinking of the excitement and happiness of the old man along the way, the author once again feels that there is nothing wrong with his persistence. At that time, the author had a vague premonition that this might be the last time the old man went home.
The purpose of the "Veterans Going Home" activity is to make every veteran who went out for the country triumph like a hero. So our assistance to all parties reflects our respect for veterans in many details. When entering the Monkey Bridge Port in Tengchong, Yunnan, the frontier armed police lined up to welcome and collectively saluted the old Yang Man Jianda; On the plane, the on-board broadcast will introduce this special guest grandly; At Shenzhen Airport, all local volunteers went out to pull up a red banner at the airport and shouted "Welcome Grandpa Yang to go home" to Yang Jianda. In Meizhou's hometown, firecrackers with a length of 100 meters are ringing, and you are welcome to return.
When he entered Tengchong and watched the young China soldiers salute him, Yang Jianda made an amazing move: he stood up trembling in a wheelchair and gave him a standard military salute.
When the author asked him why he insisted on standing up, he said, "I am a soldier in China, and a soldier should have the temperament of a soldier."
The haunted house still retains its original appearance. The longan tree in the yard has grown very old, and the fruits of its branches have matured. Yang Jianda eats a few longan every day and smacks his mouth, which is extremely sweet. On the wall of the old house, there is still a line written by Yang Jianda 14 years old: "In the 25th year of the Republic of China, on July 16, three central planes visited and distributed leaflets."
At that time, the northeast had fallen, and an all-round war of resistance was imminent.
But many things can't be found anymore. His parents are long gone, and his sister who accompanied him on a long journey and took him to India for business also died in 2006.
Aman, a distant cousin who has been engaged since childhood, has never heard from anyone. When he could not return after joining the army, he wrote to his family and released his little cousin Oman. "I fell in love with something and lost it. I miss it very much. " Yang Jianda said.
After Yang Jianda died, the author regretted not helping him find this little cousin when he returned to China.
Later, a reporter asked him that if he went to war, his parents would not be able to be filial and his loved ones would be lost. Do you regret it? Yang Jianda simply said: "When the country is in trouble, every man is responsible."
Yang Jianda will return to Myanmar again after returning to China to reunite with his younger brother and sister 10. Because Myanmar also has his home and his own children.
The night before I was sent to the border, Yang Jianda called me to him alone, took my hand and told me calmly that I would have no regrets when I went home to see my long-lost relatives. At that time, his body was already very weak, but he still insisted on talking to me for more than twenty minutes. He also said that he regarded me as his son.
That sense of foreboding is getting stronger and stronger.
On the evening of October 8th, 65438/KLOC-0, the author received a phone call from Lingling, saying that her father had been in a coma for several days. She said that when her father was sober, she told the author that in Myanmar, tens of thousands of comrades-in-arms were sacrificed and their bodies needed to go home. They also need a monument. The author asked Lingling to put the phone to her father's ear. The author said firmly, please rest assured that I will definitely fulfill these wishes. Surprisingly, Yang Jianda said "yes" weakly.
65438+1at 5 pm on October 9, just over a month after returning to China, Yang Jianda, a veteran of the Chinese Expeditionary Force, died in Myitkyina, Myanmar at the age of 90. Like many veterans who realized their wishes, they left suddenly and calmly.
After Yang Jianda's death, the author posted a video of his singing song "On the Songhua River" on the Internet as a memorial to him. A young netizen asked me why Yang Jianda sang this song, because his home is not in the northeast. The author was speechless for a moment.
On the Internet, there are several versions of the song "On the Songhua River", and some people even adapted it into rock. There is no point in singing this song without the pain of national subjugation and without remembering or knowing that history.
People who have experienced that history are dying day by day, and fewer and fewer people remember that history in their hearts.
When Chai Jing interviewed Yang Jianda, he asked him how many comrades died when he went to Myanmar. Aren't you afraid of death? Yang Jianda said without thinking: "A person will always die. If he dies, he will die. If he dies, he will die for his country."
Fortunately, this veteran who was not afraid to serve the country with his own body did not die on the battlefield, but died in political entanglements and the forgetfulness of Chinese people. In the end, he couldn't escape the fate of burying his bones in a foreign country.
