Eight Kinds of Jin Sinan Recorded in Literature

There is nothing magical about Phoebe bournei, which means that the core materials of some better varieties of nearly 200 species of Phoebe bournei are all growing and can be found in reality.

Nanmu is the first of the four famous trees in the south of the Yangtze River, and it is also the first of white trees other than mahogany, which is recognized as high-quality wood. For a long time, some people have mystified Phoebe bournei, and even claimed that no one has seen the real Jin Sinan, Phoebe bournei is extinct, and Jin Sinan can only "sea select" 1-3% from Phoebe bournei's old wood ... These statements are not credible except rumors, and we can't find any relevant records in authoritative books at all.

At present, there are about 10 recognized Phoebe bournei species (high-quality Phoebe bournei species), which can be found in reality. Among them, Nanmu Zhennan has a large output, high popularity and medium-to-upper material; Phoebe bournei and Phoebe bournei are widely distributed, but the materials are medium; Yunnan Machilus with good comprehensive quality such as material and aroma is very rare, and there is basically no forest to cut in China.

Is Nanmu a local product of China?

Don't!

According to dendrological documents, Phoebe bournei is mainly distributed in temperate to tropical regions of Asia and Latin America, especially in southern China. It is well documented that there are many kinds of nanmu in subtropical to tropical areas of Southeast Asia.

Before we know all kinds of nanmu wood abroad, of course, we can't jump off the golden nanmu, which is only available in China. For example, at the beginning of this year, a kind of nanmu from Myanmar has entered the market, which is different from any known nanmu in China.

Of course, in recent years, in two waves of speculation about Phoebe bournei, the number of trees that can be cut down by Phoebe bournei in China has been greatly reduced. Even in the main producing area of Nanmu, where people can travel easily, there are only a few underage trees without heartwood. Therefore, China is no longer the main producing area of Phoebe bournei or Phoebe bournei.

Some people say: At least Zhennan is a specialty of China, and Zhennan's hometown is in Sichuan. Only Zhennan in Sichuan has better materials. This is also a frog's opinion. In Southeast Asia, Mr. Ye Tan has seen many Phoebe bournei trees. Moreover, nanmu produced in those places is better in aroma, texture, material and color than nanmu in Sichuan, but the wood properties are bigger than nanmu in Sichuan.

Can you identify Phoebe bournei by experience? How to define Phoebe bournei?

Of course.

The so-called Phoebe bournei is not the standard name of a certain tree or wood, let alone the academic term of any subject. It's just the name of some high-quality nanmu given by folk carpenters all over China. According to research, in North China with Beijing as the center, southern nanmu with "golden thread emerging" on the wood surface is called "Jin Sinan". However, because northerners generally can't distinguish the species of nanmu, the "Jin Sinan" in their mouth is not necessarily the high-quality nanmu recognized by southerners, because most nanmu wood surfaces will have "golden threads", so some northerners often look at local nanmu with "golden threads".

Although many domestic scholars and experts claim to know Minnan very well, and some people who don't even know Minnan claim to be "the first person in Jin Sinan, China", so far no one has conducted rigorous scientific research and published on the macro-properties and micro-structural characteristics of Jin Sinan wood.

I only saw Mr. Zhou Mo's definition of "talking is better than nothing" in his book "Wooden Note": "Golden nanmu" is generally yellow with light green ... and some materials are yellow, red and brown; The surface of the wood sparkled in the sun and gold threads emerged. "But, if you look for nanmu according to Mr. Zhou Mo's standards, there are dozens of nanmu, and some stinky nanmu are among them. Even nanmu, which is widely distributed in tropical areas, can be called Jin Sinan. This is no joke! Fortunately, Mr. Zhou also listed eight tree species as "relatively recognized" tree species in Jin Sinan.

In reality, especially since 20 1 1, nanmu speculation has begun to take shape. It is very urgent for wood industry and collectors to accurately define Jin Sinan. Here, I would like to share with you a definition, which can be operated by experience without any physical and chemical detection means. It has been proved to be reliable by dozens of nanmu identification practices. This definition includes five inseparable conditions:

First, Phoebe bournei is a heartwood-growing wood in Zhennan and Runnan genera of Lauraceae. Secondly, nanmu gold silk has obvious unique fragrance when it is newly opened; Thirdly, the structure of nanmu is staggered, and it is filled with reflective crystalline substances, which will produce obvious reflective effect under side light. Some of this reflection is gold, and some is floating gold. Fourth, the color of Jin Sinan wood is generally yellow with light green, and some older materials are yellow, red and brown; Fifth, Jin Sinan refers to the heartwood (goods A) of these high-quality nanmu trees, excluding the bark and sapwood (goods C) of these trees, and excluding the tender wood (goods B) of these trees that have not yet formed heartwood.

Those who meet the above five conditions can be judged as Phoebe bournei.

It is worth noting that there are great differences in the understanding of tree species in different parts of Jin Sinan. In the southwest of the main producing area of Nanmu, few people are called Jin Sinan, and they are generally called Nanmu; In Sichuan and Guizhou, because there are many nanmu trees, the materials are good, the colors are bright and the recognition is high, but Guizhou does not agree with nanmu, and often regards nanmu as Phoebe bournei. In East China, Zinan was called Xiangnan in ancient times, also known as Jin Sinan; Yunnan is a region with many species of Phoebe bournei (but few recoverable forests). Because it produces a variety of high-quality hardwoods such as mahogany, Phoebe bournei has never been regarded as high-quality and high-grade wood. Jin Sinan recognized by Yunnan folk carpenters only refers to Minnan varieties produced in tropical areas.
