I don't understand the dialect of my college roommate. How can I communicate?

When I was in college, a lot of things actually happened. For me, I am most interested in dialect, because I am from the northeast and my school is in Handan. According to the truth, Handan dialect is not particularly strong, but my roommate is from the south. I really don't understand the dialect they speak. Many people are curious about your dialect and don't understand how you communicate with your roommate.

You don't have to worry about your daily communication, because many students in China can speak Mandarin, but this is not absolute. For example, one of my classmates, a Cantonese native, can speak Cantonese but not Mandarin. Our communication basically depends on guessing. Sometimes I call home and speak my hometown dialect, but I don't understand a word. For me from the north.
