The Story of Su Dongpo and Fo Yin Zen Master

Let's talk about Jackson Fo Yin:

Although Fo Yin is not as famous as Su Dongpo, we read it when we were students. In Xue Wei's The Story of the Nuclear Ship, we described a nuclear ship engraved with the story of Su Dongpo's Red Cliff. There are "three people sitting in a bow, Dongpo crowned in the middle, Fo Yin on the right and Lu Zhi on the left."

Zen master Fo Yin, a monk in Song Dynasty in China, was able to recite Tang poems when he was three years old. By the age of five, he had been able to recite more than 200 of the 300 Tang poems, and soon became familiar with poetry, calligraphy, Yi, Li, the Spring and Autumn Period-the Five Classics. Then he studied China and a hundred schools of thought, read the Cold Eye Classics, and found that this was the truth. He became a monk at the age of sixteen, specializing in Buddhism.

Fo Yin Zen Master is famous all over the country for his excellent moral character and academic achievements. Emperor Zongshen also gave him a "Korean gold bowl". At that time, many Buddhist temples asked him to be the abbot.

When Su Dongpo went to Huangzhou, the abbot of Fo Yin Zen Master was in Guizong Temple in Lushan Mountain.

Huangzhou is on the north bank of the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, just across the river from Lushan Mountain in Jiangxi Province on the south bank of the Yangtze River.

Therefore, Su Dongpo often crosses the river by boat, talks about Zen with Zen master Fo Yin, and often jokes in conversation, revealing the Zen principles of Buddhism from jokes.

Story 1:

One day, Su Dongpo and Fo Yin Jackson sat cross-legged and chatted.

Su Dongpo asked Jackson Fo Yin, "What do you think I look like now?"

Zen master Fo Yin said, "I think you look like a Buddha."

Su Dongpo said to Jackson Fo Yin, "I think you look like a pile of cow dung."

Fo Yin Jackson smiled and said nothing.

Su Dongpo thought he had won, so he went home and told Su Xiaomei smugly.

Su Xiaomei said, "You lost. All methods are idealistic, but they are not external things. Master Fo Yin thinks of Buddha, so he thinks of you as Buddha, and you think of cow dung, so you think of Master as a pile of cow dung. A Buddha came out of Master's mouth, and you pulled out a pile of cow dung. Your mouth stinks, haven't you lost it? " Su Dongpo blushed after hearing this.

From this story, people realize that what kind of mentality has what kind of outlook on life.

Story 2:

One day, Su Dongpo went to Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. When he saw Maitreya sitting in the center of the hall, he always looked at himself and smiled. He was so happy and poetic that he wrote his next poem:

On the first day, the sky was clear;

Eight winds can't blow, sitting on the purple lotus.

"kowtow" means to show respect;

"Heaven in the sky" means that heaven is respected, and Buddha is more respected by heaven, so Buddha is called "heaven in the sky";

"One thousand lights one thousand" means that the Buddha's merciful light illuminates three thousand worlds. In a solar system, many planets make up a small world; One thousand small worlds, one Hanazono Sakura world; A thousand Hanazono Sakura worlds are combined into a thousand worlds; A thousand worlds are combined into one world. )

Eight winds can't blow is a beautiful and moving poem, and it is also the center of the whole poem.

"Eight Winds" refers to weighing, mocking, destroying, fame, profit, decline, suffering and pleasure; ("Great Wisdom" said: "Profit, decline, ruin, reputation, weight, ridicule, bitterness and joy; Four shun and four violations can drum up the feelings of animals. " Ordinary people are happy when they are in good times and will be on cloud nine; If you encounter ridicule and slander, you will be angry; When you are in adversity, you will worry. But there is one thing that cannot be moved by the eight winds-Buddha.

"Sitting on the purple lotus" means that the Buddha has exhausted all doubts and all virtues are complete, so he can sit solemnly and safely on the lotus platform without being shaken by the outside world.

This is a poem with high artistic conception. It is absolutely impossible to write without considerable attainments in Buddhism. It also shows that the author has his transcendental realm: like the Buddha, he has reached the point of mind-energy instead of matter.

Su Dongpo himself is of course very satisfied! So he sent a very good boy to show it to Jackson Fo Yin.

Fo Yin, the Zen master, wrote the word "fart" on it and asked the very young people to bring it back to Su Dongpo.

When Su Dongpo saw the word "fart" approved by Jackson Fo Yin, he flew into a rage and immediately crossed the river by boat to argue with Jackson Fo Yin.

Zen master Fo Yin didn't see him, but posted a note on the door: "Eight winds can't blow, fart over Jiang Lai." It means: don't you know how to play the eight winds? How did you fart Jiang Lai?

From this story, people realize that even a great writer with profound knowledge, Su Like Dongpo, lacks determination and wisdom if he doesn't often reflect on himself.
