Creation background

Huang Baiming went to Singapore on 1993, and a friend invited him to see Tang Cheng. Hengtai has ancient yamen, teahouses, pavilions, and Tang Cheng has ancient brothels. Seeing these ancient buildings, Huang Baiming was suddenly inspired, so he planned to shoot a costume comedy, and the whole movie could be shot in Tang Cheng.

Huang Baiming remembered a story in the Water Margin called "Little Overlord Drunk to Sell Gold". It will be interesting if the story is adapted into a comedy. Later, Huang Baiming invited two Hong Kong screenwriters, Gu Dezhao and Ma Weihao, to write the script. After communicating with Huang Baiming, the two writers immediately flew back to Hong Kong from Singapore and worked around the clock to write the script.
