The Thai royal family is not of Chinese descent. Why do all the Thai kings have to have Chinese names?
When talking about Thailand, many people will think of labels such as ladyboys, beaches, and fragrant rice. However, they do not know that the Thai royal family is also a relatively special existence. Under the current trend of equality and democracy in the world, the King of Thailand still has a very high status. Power is exercised similarly to the rule of the feudal era. In addition, another characteristic of the Thai royal family is that every Thai king must have a Chinese name, even if they are not Chinese. Why is this?
Thai Royal Family
After the Song Dynasty, with the development of shipbuilding technology and navigation technology, fishermen living in the southeastern coastal areas became more and more desperate when they could no longer survive. More and more people are going to Nanyang to find a way to survive. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, a fisherman named Zheng from Guangdong chose to go to Southeast Asia because life was too difficult. He wandered all the way and arrived in Siam, which is today's Thailand.
Who knew that even if the fisherman surnamed Zheng escaped to Siam, he would not be able to live a good life and would be poor for half his life, but he would have a son who was versatile in both civil and military affairs and was brave and good at fighting. At that time, the Burmese dynasty invaded Siam, and it was his son who rose up to defeat the Burmese and established his own dynasty, which was historically known as the Thonburi Dynasty in Thailand. That's right, the son of a fisherman named Zheng was Emperor Zheng Xin in Thai history.
Portrait of Zheng Xin
After Zheng Xin established the dynasty, in accordance with the ancient tribute customs, he wrote to Emperor Qianlong and wanted to surrender to the Qing Dynasty in order to win the Qing Dynasty. of asylum. During the Qianlong period, the Qing Dynasty was at its peak. Emperor Qianlong was naturally happy when he saw that a Chinese had become the king of Siam, so he directly canonized Zheng Xin as the king of Siam and rewarded him with gold-seal jewelry to show his legitimacy. status.
Emperor Taksin was the king of Thailand for 15 years, but in his later years he became old and frail, and he relaxed his vigilance towards the people around him. So the Thai Tongluan launched a coup, imprisoned Emperor Taksin, and took the throne himself.
Although Tongluan won the throne by launching a coup, he did not obtain the permission of the Qing Dynasty. According to the rules of the time, when a vassal country changes the throne, it needs to explain the reasons to its suzerain country, and Tongluan The throne was obtained improperly, so naturally he did not dare to explain the reason to the Qing Dynasty. The Qing Dynasty was still relatively powerful at that time. How could Siam, a small Southeast Asian country, be able to resist it? Once Emperor Qianlong learned of this, he would definitely send a large army to suppress it. Zheng Xin is already dead, and he will not be able to sit on the throne for long.
Just when Tongluan was worried about this matter, one of his ministers came up with an idea and suggested that he write to Emperor Qianlong as Zheng Xin’s son to request canonization. Anyway, Emperor Tiangao of Siam was far away. , Emperor Qianlong didn’t know whether it was true or false. Once Qianlong granted the title, wouldn’t his throne be a matter of course?
So he couldn't wait and sent an envoy to Emperor Qianlong, lying that he was Zheng Xin's son Zheng Hua. Because there was a coup in the country, Zheng Xin was killed, he inherited the throne, and wrote a letter to Qianlong. Canonized by the emperor.
The Emperor Qianlong at that time was no longer as wise and powerful as he was back then. When he saw that he was Zheng Xin’s son, he directly canonized him. This Tongluan was the ancestor of today’s Thai royal family, known as Rama I in history. Since then, the Thai royal family has had a tradition that their children must have a Chinese name as soon as they are born, so that when they ascend the throne, they can report it to the Qing Dynasty.
The current Thai King Rama X
Although the Qing Dynasty has been destroyed for more than a hundred years, today’s Thai royal family still follows this tradition, such as the current Thai King Rama X. In this world, his Thai name is "Maha Vajiralongkorn", and his Chinese name is Zheng Mian, that's it.
