One day, Mark Twain gave a speech in a small town. At lunch a young man told him that his uncle never smiled. No one or one thing could make his uncle laugh.

But Mark Twain said he would make his uncle laugh. He asked the young man to bring his uncle to his house. Mark Twain told many interesting stories that night. Everyone laughed, but the old man didn't even show a smile. Mark Twain told the funniest story, and the old man still didn't laugh. Finally, Mark Twain stopped telling the story. He felt very tired.

A few days later, Mark Twain told one of his friends about this incident. His friend laughed and said that he knew the old man. He is deaf.
