Several cities in Chaoshan have the same cultural customs and language background, which are collectively called Chaoshan culture, while Chaozhou in a narrow sense refers to Chaozhou.

Chaozhou, referred to as Chao for short, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, located in the east of Guangdong Province, in the middle and lower reaches of Hanjiang River. It borders Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province in the east, Jieyang City, Shantou City and Meizhou City in the east of Guangdong Province in the west, south and north respectively. The total area of the jurisdiction is 36 13.9 square kilometers, of which the sea area is 533 square kilometers and the coastline is 136 kilometers.
