What is the reason why some traditional Chinese culture can be preserved in Japan and South Korea but cannot be developed locally?
As an ancient country with thousands of years of history, China has very precious traditional culture, but it seems that it has not done well enough in terms of inheritance and development. Whether it is the origin of China's jiaodong and Japan's sumo wrestling, or South Korea's protection of traditional culture, Japanese and Korean peoples seem to pay more attention to the inheritance of traditional culture.
First of all, I think this has a lot to do with our history. China has gone through many dynasties. Although Confucianism was the most respected, each dynasty had its own cultural characteristics and ideological tendencies. The change of dynasties, due to political reasons and changes in the aesthetic tastes of different dynasties, will inevitably lead to the decline of some cultures.
Take sumo wrestling as an example. The sport of sumo wrestling existed in the Qin and Han Dynasties. At that time, it was called Jiaodui. In the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, it was renamed sumo wrestling. After the Song Dynasty, although sumo wrestling was once a popular leisure sport for the common people, some officials felt that the competitiveness of sumo wrestling was not suitable for elegance, so they wrote to the emperor to cancel it. Since then, sumo wrestling has declined in China. Looking back at Japan, during the Tang Dynasty, sumo was brought to Japan by envoys sent to the Tang Dynasty. This sport became popular in Japan and slowly developed. It can be seen that the inheritance of traditional culture has a great relationship with the historical environment. If every change of dynasty can be regarded as a cultural break, then the inheritance of certain traditional cultures will indeed be powerless.
Secondly, I think it has something to do with the richness of the country’s traditional culture. As a thousand-year-old country, China has many precious cultural heritages that have been preserved in various forms through historical accumulation. Our country has done a good job in protecting certain traditional cultures, such as Jingdezhen’s ceramic culture and various festival cultures. Our traditional culture is indeed rich and colorful, and because of this, omissions will inevitably occur. So we can't just look at Japan's inheritance of sumo culture very well, but also look at what China has retained.
