The Naxi people also spread the story of "loving dead trees". It is said that there is a huge old tree with an elegant umbrella cover on the Thorn Ping Dam. Legend has it that Nine Life Gold was hanged under this tree. Since then, whenever their freely chosen marriage is blocked, young men and women in villages near and far run down this tree to end their lives, with at least dozens of couples every year.
