I don't think it matters whether this sentence is said by this person or not. The key is: is this sentence true? In my opinion, the scope of this sentence should be expanded, not just university education, but the education of China as a whole.

The Republic of China was the golden age of education in China. If we want to list the famous scholars of that period, we can conveniently pull out a long list. What about now? Maybe we will name Qian Zhongshu and Ji Xianlin again, but we can't name other people. Strictly speaking, these two people also belonged to that period, and they continued the lineage of the Republic of China. Now, this blood line is broken. In Qian Zhongshu's last sentence, we didn't cultivate such a figure, which is the pain of his old man's life.

The ultimate goal of education is to cultivate talents, cultivate people's good thinking and virtue, cultivate people's tolerance and mind, defend people's dreams and freedom, and defend the brilliance of human nature and life. If education deviates from human nature, it is not education, but anti-education and the enemy of education. Deviating from the ultimate goal of education and moving towards the opposite side of education is a major lesson of our education.
