What does fishing mean?

Laozai is the name of migrant workers in Guangdong and Guangxi.

There are two origins of the name "Laozai", one is homophonic in Mandarin, and the other is "fishing for the world" in Cantonese. Guangdong people compare money to water, and fishing is related to water, so mainlanders coming to Guangdong to work and earn money are called fishing.

Cantonese people call men who speak northern dialects fishing for children and heads. Women who speak northern dialects are called girls and women, mainlanders born in Guangdong are called the second generation, and locals who can't speak Cantonese because of their popularity are called local fishermen.

Legend has it that northerners used to come to Guangdong and called them "buddies" at the beginning of a sentence. However, due to the accent, some people will pronounce "buddy" as the first sound, which is similar to Cantonese pronunciation.

Then those who spoke Mandarin were ridiculed by Cantonese as "fishing for pine nuts", which was later simplified to "fishing for pine nuts". Since then, Cantonese people have always called those who can't speak Cantonese Lao Zi. Fishermen in Guangdong and Guangxi used to work hard. They work as long as they are paid.
