Why is the sea blue?
Why is the sea blue? The sea does look blue, but when you put it in a glass bottle, you will find it is colorless. Since the sea itself is colorless, how can the sea be blue? This is because the color of the sea is determined by the color of the light reflected from the sea surface and the backscattered light from the inside of the sea.
as we know, although the sun's rays are white on the surface, they are actually composed of seven kinds of visible light: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and purple. These seven kinds of light have different wavelengths, and seawater with different depths will absorb light with different wavelengths, that is to say, seawater is selective in absorbing and scattering light with different wavelengths. In general, red and yellow lights have long wavelengths and are most easily absorbed by seawater. When they are injected into seawater, most of the light will be absorbed by seawater, and only a few of them will be reflected and scattered by water molecules and suspended particles in seawater. However, blue light and green light with shorter wavelength have strong penetration ability. When they are injected into seawater, only a small part of them are absorbed by seawater, and most of them are reflected and scattered around when they meet water molecules or other suspended particles. In this way, seawater absorbs less blue light and reflects much more, and more blue light is returned to the water surface as it goes deeper into the seawater. When these reflected blue lights enter our eyes, the sea we see is blue.
although almost all the oceans on the earth look blue, in fact, the depth of seawater varies greatly from place to place, the amount of suspended substances in seawater is also different, and there are different climatic conditions in different places, which will affect the reflection of light by seawater. Therefore, the sea doesn't look all blue, and its color varies from time to time. In different sea areas, the color of seawater looks different. Generally, the deep ocean is dark blue, the marginal sea area of the ocean is light blue, some places are turquoise, and the shallow sea area may even be light yellow.
