Inspiration from the ocean:
Check out ten unique creative designs
Have you ever thought that a square fish can inspire the style of a car? design? And an algae cocktail could help us defeat those stubborn, antibiotic-resistant bacteria? In addition, swimming schools of fish can inspire people to design more efficient wind power plants? The ocean contains endless inspiration, inspiring people to design and invent everything from robots to various breakthroughs in biomedicine. Listed below are ten designs and inventions related to the ocean.
Boxfish-style Mercedes-Benz:
The Mercedes-Benz in the picture looks like a boxfish. The boxfish is a hard-scale fish that lives in tropical areas and swims very fast. "Its skeleton is rectangular, very similar to a car," explained Daimler, who led a scientific team to analyze the fish's skeletal features, including its armored, hard outer skin. You know, this skin can hide the secret of the boxfish's swimming speed. Due to its small size and built-in direct-injection diesel engine, this Mercedes-Benz can reach a speed of 113 kilometers per gallon of gasoline.
Squid Robot:
When it is necessary to carry out dangerous underwater tasks such as searching for ores on the seabed, robots are the best choice. By using bionics technology to design them with precise movements and faster speeds, and using less fuel, such robots are undoubtedly perfect and efficient experts. The Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Osaka University in Japan designed this "squid robot". By taking advantage of the physical characteristics of squid and other marine animals, and installing gelatin panels on both sides of the robot, it can fly through the water. Another advantage of this design is that the robot can be completely under human control even in very unstable situations.
Nautilus:
The geometric world seems to be dominated by some so-called numbers and models, including the Nautilus, which is famous for its "golden section spiral". The nautilus has been found countless times in nature, and its spiral extension follows the golden ratio. This proportion not only brings a sense of visual coordination, but also enhances the solidity of the overall structure. If you look carefully at any kind of spiral staircase, you will find a spiral that resembles a shell. You know, this is no accident.
Coral Reef Village:
Architect Vincent Gaborli proposed the concept of designing after animals and plants such as dragonflies and water lilies. She was inspired by underwater creatures, which led to the creation of the coral reef village in the picture. This modular housing concept aims to improve housing conditions in crisis-hit Haiti. The housing units are built one on top of another and are designed based on the organic composition of the coral reef.
Designing buildings with the help of marine mammal bones:
How was the building frame in the picture above created with the help of marine mammal bones? A "radiolar" project conducted by the University of Kassel in Germany answered this question. This study examines the stability of mammalian skeletal structures and their aesthetic value as a 3D modeling software. The designers applied the results of their observations to actual operations, using strong hexagonal unit cells to complete the construction of the mesh device in the picture.
