What are the characteristics of snow?

Snowflakes are mostly hexagonal, and there are many patterns, because ice molecules are mostly hexagonal. For hexagonal flake ice crystals, due to the different curvatures of their surfaces, edges and corners, they have different saturated vapor pressures, of which the saturated vapor pressure at the corner is the largest and the edge is the smallest on the plane.

Under the same actual water vapor pressure, the sublimation growth of ice crystals is different because of the different saturated water vapor pressures of each part. For example, when the actual water vapor pressure is only greater than the plane saturated water vapor pressure, water vapor only condenses on the surface, forming columnar snowflakes.

The formation of snow:

The water vapor in the atmosphere condenses directly or the water droplets condense directly, which is snow. It can also be said that when the temperature in the cloud is too low, small water droplets form ice crystals and fall to the ground, while it is still snow, it is snowing. When ice melts, it absorbs heat, so the ground temperature will be lower than when it snows.

The atmosphere needs to contain cold ice crystal nuclei. The cold air is quite strong and carries moisture, and it can snow from 1℃ to 10℃.

Where it can snow: There will be opportunities for snow in places with climate zones ranging from mid-latitude to high-latitude (that is, areas south of the Tropic of Cancer/north of the Tropic of Cancer), and there will also be opportunities for snow in some Zhongshan or plateau areas with an altitude of more than 2,000 meters in low latitudes.

Ocean airflow will also indirectly affect the chance of snow in this area. If there are more warm currents in high latitudes, it will reduce the chance of snow in this area (such as Honshu to Kyushu, Japan).
