Yu adopted the method of dredging, and the result was successful. After Yu succeeded in harnessing water, Shun gave his surname to Yu.

At the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, when the vassal was enfeoffed, a branch with the surname of Yan was founded in Tanguo (now west of Zhangqiu County, Shandong Province), with the title of Zi. At the beginning of the Spring and Autumn Period, he became king, and King Zhouzhuang annexed Tan in four years (683 BC). Tan's son fled to Juguo (now Juxian County, Shandong Province).
