Le 'an Lantern Festival is a unique traditional folk custom in Luocun, Nanhai. It has a history of more than 300 years and is well known. There is a folk saying that "lights are lit on the ninth day of the first month".

Looking for the history of lanterns

I asked several old people, but I couldn't fully explain the origin of the lanterns in Le 'an, my hometown. Finally found the complete answer in the Lantern Festival.

Le 'an Lantern Festival existed in the late Ming Dynasty and has a history of more than 300 years. According to legend, there was a young man named Mai Miao Qing who had been married to his wife for eight years and had no children. During the Guangxu period of Qing Dynasty (1875), on the ninth day of the first month of Yihai, the lanterns on the ground of Le 'an Lantern were like a sea of people. Mai Miaoqing helped his wife visit the hometown of lanterns and bought a "Guanyin Lotus Lantern". The wife was pregnant, gave birth to a son in the second year, and won the scholar. After the news spread, people rushed to follow suit and formed a lively Lantern Festival.

Explore the "original stone"

It is said that the stone on which Mai Miaoqing's wife sat pregnant was called the "birthstone", and people rushed to sit on it.

I'm curious about this. How powerful is the stone? I came to the ancestral hall of Jiang family and sat on the legendary "Son Stone". According to the old people in the village, the original "birthstone" in the market was brown, but it was lost during the Cultural Revolution, so people found a blue-brown stone as the birthstone and put a "walking stone" next to it as a foil.

Visit the lantern making master

I learned from my mother that Master Jiang from Shangfang Village has been selling lanterns for many years, so I went to visit him.

Master Jiang opened a small shop in Le 'an Market. Every Spring Festival, his family will make lanterns and sell them in shops. When I got to his shop, he was sitting under a lantern, wrapped in paper flowers. According to Master Jiang, three generations in their family made lanterns, and the father passed them on to his son. He also said that there were many lantern makers in Fangshang village in the past, and the archway at the entrance of the village was "looking at the golden lantern resort above". At present, there are only five or six people making lanterns in the village, and most of them are made in other places. Master Jiang lights lanterns every year 10, and about 20 days before the Spring Festival, the whole family begins to open bamboo, tie frames, tie flowers and assemble them ... He also said that compared with previous lotus lanterns, their shapes and crafts are much more exquisite, and they are more beautiful to decorate with many modern decorations.

This is the first time since last year that the government intends to inherit and develop lanterns.

At present, Le 'an Lantern Festival has applied for national intangible cultural heritage.
