The difference between Corea and Korea

In English, both North and South Korea have the word "KOREA" in their names. However, many experts and scholars from the Korean Peninsula have recently stressed that the spelling of the above-mentioned word should be changed to "COREA" while the pronunciation remains unchanged. They believe that "KOREA" is an "English name" imposed on the locals by Japanese colonists during their occupation of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, in order to ensure that "Japan will always be in front of Korea" when ranking countries according to English letters. This topic, which is a matter of debate among historians and linguists, has entered the attention of the Seoul Legislature. Earlier, many members jointly requested that the country's English name be "corrected."

In English textbooks and maps published in the 19th century, the English name of "North Korea" was "COREA". The British Embassy established in Seoul in 1890 also used the name "COREA". However, after entering the 20th century, "KOREA" gradually became popular and eventually completely replaced "COREA". Historians emphasize that this was the result of the Japanese government's "tricks".

During the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, almost every Korean Red Devils cheerleader held a sign with "COREA" in their hands, which became a scene in the TV broadcasts of that year. Many experts and scholars called for the urgent implementation of the above-mentioned "name rectification project" in order to completely eradicate the "evil consequences" forcibly left by Japanese imperialism in the culture of the Korean Peninsula.

However, South Korean experts believe that although changing the English spelling of the country's name can make "citizens have more national pride", the "cost of this approach is too high."
