Simple past perfect tense (simple past perfect tense)

The past perfect tense indicates an action that happened before a certain time in the past.

Form of past perfect tense:

/Yes/No/Question

There is no disagreement/I have spoken. /I didn't speak. /Did I speak?

For irregular verbs, use the past participle form. For regular verbs, just add ed.

Usage of past perfect tense

■ Actions that occurred before a certain time in the past.

(only emphasize the facts, not the duration)

Before I came here, I talked to Jack.

Past continuous tense (past continuous tense)

The process of emphasizing an action in the past.

Usage of past continuous tense

■ Emphasize the course of past actions.

He is playing football.

■ Two simultaneous actions (past)

He was washing dishes while she was preparing dinner.

■ An ongoing action at some time in the past.

I was having breakfast when the telephone suddenly rang.

Simple past (simple past)

The simple past tense means that the past action only happened once and never happened several times. It can also be used in the middle of one action after another or another.

The use of simple past tense

■ The past behavior only happened once, never happened or happened several times.

He visits his parents every weekend.

■ Past behaviors occur one after another.

He came in, took off his coat and sat down.

■ The past action happened in the middle of another action.

To put it bluntly, you can't use the past perfect tense alone. For example, both things A and B happened in the past, but A happened before B, so A uses the past perfect tense and B uses the past tense.

The past tense only refers to what happened in the past.

The past continuous tense is rarely used alone and often used with another sentence. There are two things, A and B both happened in the past, but A and B happened at the same time, so A (or B) is used in the past tense and B (or A) is used in the past tense.
