The next morning, people discovered Laining's body. He died trying to put out the fire, and he was still climbing to put out the fire.

In May 1988, the Chinese Communist Youth League and the State Education Commission made a decision to award Lai Ning "Small Chairman of the Chinese Young Pioneers", "Heroic Youth" and "National Top Ten Young Pioneers" and other honors.
