Zhan Zhaoxia, a local female writer, recorded in detail the story of the missionaries who cultivated outstanding talents for Xiamen and even modern China in her book "Old Friends and Past Events on Gulangyu Island". Although the situation is special, many Westerners did bring advanced Western culture and it blossomed locally. For example, Lin Yutang, a writer with knowledge of both China and the West, and Lin Qiaozhi, one of the main pioneers and founders of obstetrics and gynecology in China, all benefited from the cultural atmosphere of Gulangyu Island at that time.

And people who grew up under this kind of "traceless" east wind are always afraid of "the west wind gradually brings flying frost". How can they understand and deal with the "shoofeng"-like impact brought about by the changing world situation?

No matter which country they come from, for foreign friends who have taken root in Gulangyu, benefited the locals, and even raised funds overseas to set up educational and medical facilities, they may not be able to realize Mencius’ Three Joys because they are far away from their hometowns. The first happiness is that it can obviously realize the two spiritual happiness of "looking up to heaven and not bowing down to others" and "getting the world's talents and educating them".

Because of their righteousness and passion to "recruit talents", even if the disseminators of these cultures encountered mistreatment by Japanese invaders, looking back on their lives, they must have gained the joy of being "happy to hang out in Fusang" .

Of course, Gulangyu's spirit of pursuit and acceptance of advanced culture has been passed down from generation to generation. Because of the hard work of the predecessors, even if the "sparse stars are faint", one can foresee the "dawn" the next morning. The wind is good when it comes, and the moon is bright and yellow at night.

At the ferry port, I saw the comparison of the past and present photos of Gulangyu Island, and I couldn’t help but lament the changes of time. However, I was moved by understanding the story of the new owner of Gulangyu Island and the new chapter of Gulangyu Island written by the successors.
