Behind the scenes production:

From 65438 to 0988, directed by Song Chong and written by Zhang Zhilu, the first children's sci-fi film "Babe from the Thunderbolt" in China came out. This film, with a fresh perspective, tells the story of Beibei, a little boy with electricity in his hand, getting rid of loneliness and seeking love and understanding. These tortuous, absurd and humorous plots show the life of a child who is different from the past with modern consciousness. Movies are not only loved by young audiences, but also deeply impressed by their growing memories.

Song Chong: Give the child a small piece of suitable soil.

From 1986, I was transferred from Shanghai Film Studio to Children's Film Studio as the factory director, during which I filmed "Babe from Thunderbolt", from which I formed a fate with my children. After shooting so many plays, the most impressive ones are "Flash Ball" and "Beibei from the Thunderbolt", which shows the influence of children's films in those years.

Found "Beibei" in the National Story King Competition

Why did you choose Zhang Jing to play Beibei? I have my own views on the choice of actors in children's films. I'm not looking for a loud and beautiful child, but I must have a personality and a distinctive appearance. At that time, Zhang Jing had a big head and big eyes. He was very special. He was found in the national story king competition. At that time, I was a judge and found that his story was very distinctive. Some children say stories are as exaggerated as acting, or as rigid as reciting texts. Zhang Jing is different. He is very lively. The most important thing is that he is sensitive and can infect people who listen to his stories. My eyes are shining. Later, I found him when I was filming Babe from the Thunderbolt, and he was the only one.

Zhang Ping, a tall and sharp girl, was also selected for the story king competition, which is so in line with the characters in the play. Wang Ying, a gentle and lovely little girl who plays "Sweet", is the youngest of several young actors, very immature and very temperamental. She is the granddaughter of Bai Shen, an old director of Shanghai Film Factory. The film completely avoids the "preaching" traces given by children's films in the past, but only tells that a child does not want to be a special person. He just wants to be a normal person, eager to love and be loved. At that time, some small audiences were still very sorry: why did Beibei's super power disappear? In fact, when he grows up, he may not understand why we have to arrange this.

"Cosmic Man" turned out to be Feng.

It should be said that Babe from the Thunderbolt is the first children's science fiction film in China, and The Dead Light on Coral Island in the early 1980s is the first attempt of a feature film. Science fiction has a lot to do with the country's scientific productivity and the development of space technology. At that time, there was already a movie "E.T." in America. At that time, because of the underdeveloped three-dimensional technology and limited funds, many things could not be filmed, so we simply filmed the model first and then synthesized the special effects.

Movies are technically weak, so we emphasize human feelings more, mainly relying on the plot to impress people. The climax of the film is that children go to the Great Wall to call for "cosmic people", because at that time people thought that the only trace of China that could be seen in the distant outer space was the Great Wall. During the 40-day shooting, most of the exterior scenes were shot in Shenzhen, because the most modern and modern schools and high-rise streets in Shenzhen were shot there at that time.

Speaking of cosmic man, he appeared in the film several times. It was Feng, an artist in Child Shadow, who made this "all-metal jacket" dress and covered it with sequins to perform on the stage. He was afraid that others would wear it out, so he acted it himself. At that time, two graduates from the Film Academy of Grade 78 were assigned to children's film studios and later became directors. I strongly supported their ideas. Director Feng's first film "The Disappearing Atmosphere" and director's first TV series "Good Dad, Bad Dad" were both sensational. In fact, I am thinking that as long as I give my child a small piece of suitable soil, it will take root and flourish.

Zhang Zhilu: Babe from the Thunderbolt only belongs to that era.

The phenomenon of "static electricity" inspired me

The original name of "Babe from the Thunderbolt" is "Children with Charges", but what inspired me is actually the phenomenon of "static electricity", because touching the door handle with hands in dry weather will produce "static electricity", as if people can generate electricity. Later, the story of such a child was extended. At that time, I was the director of the literature department of Zaierying, and I briefly told Song Chong about this idea at the editorial board meeting. He was very excited and urged me to write the story into a script. Later, I took a more fashionable name, called Thunderbolt Beibei.

I was born in physics, because I graduated from normal school and later taught, so one is familiar with scientific phenomena and the other is clear about children's psychology. There are also different views on why Beibei charges. Children will naively think that Beibei is the son of a cosmonaut, who fell to the earth and lived with ordinary children. In fact, what we thought at that time was that Beibei was endowed with "super powers", which was a bit like "Batman" accidentally bitten by a spider and possessed magical abilities. It can be seen that children and adults have very different ideas. Although it is unlikely that "Beibei" is the son of a cosmic person, it is quite interesting since children think so, which leads to an understanding that we didn't expect at first.

I remember that E.T. cost 3 million dollars, and our production cost was 470,000 RMB. It should be said that Babe from the Thunderbolt is very pleasing, and many people didn't expect it to appear. I remember when the movie came out, I let the adults watch it first. They think it's nothing new. It's an ordinary children's film. I didn't expect the child to see it. That's great.

I remember when we went to Shanghai, all the children in the cinema jumped with excitement. They basically stood and watched the whole movie, and they cried unabashedly. We know that children approve of it, and they really like Beibei from Thunderbolt.

Children's movies should also be commercialized enough.

In fact, the current situation of children's films in China is quite sad. Many people think that it is not the mainstream culture ideologically. Moreover, a large number of directors have psychological obstacles to this part of creation; Otherwise, some people will simply say that China's own children's science fiction can't do better than the United States. I think this is because we adults are "too pragmatic" and lack the essence of naive imagination. There is also the current film market, which mostly relies on hype and commercial operation. In fact, the question of children's films is not whether they are "excellent", but whether they are commercialized enough. Speaking of how popular Harry Potter is in the world, don't forget how much effort has been made in its commercial operation, with such a big company supporting it. Iranian films such as Little Shoes and Cowherd Spring are excellent, but they are far less commercialized than Harry Potter.

When it comes to the present situation of children's films in China, it is a common phenomenon that after the films are filmed here, they are directly put into storage there, and they cannot enter the cinema to meet the general audience. In fact, this is also a waste of human labor, and it is impossible to operate benign. So I said that children's films such as Babe from the Thunderbolt, Magic Watch, My September, and the disappearance of the atmosphere really belonged to that era, and the small audience was lucky.
