What you said in that book is not troublesome enough. I used to teach Japanese as a second language. The teacher didn't teach word groups anyway.
1.Noun+は+verb basic form +ことできます. (What can someone do)
2.Noun+は+verb basic form +ことです. (What is xx of XXX)
3.Noun+は+verb た +ことがぁります. (What did someone do)
Corresponding examples:
1. Nakamura さんはギターをぞくことできます. Nakamura can play the guitar.
2.さんのはギターをぞくことです. Nakamura's hobby is playing guitar.
さんはへったことがぁります has visited China. Nakamura has been to China once.
