Fenghuang Ancient Building was built in the late Ming Dynasty and flourished in the late Qing Dynasty. With a history of 200 years, it is still well preserved. In December 2002, it was included in the fourth batch of provincial-level "residents of ancient building complexes" cultural relics protection units.
Fenghuang Town is surrounded by mountains and rivers and was once known as the mouth of the Sancha River. The Shechuan River, the Zao River and the Shuibigou River meet here to form a delta. Fenghuang Town is built on this fertile delta with mountains and rivers. There is a mountain in the south of the town called Phoenix Mountain, so it was later called Phoenix Mouth. According to local historical records, Fenghuang Town began to have a market in the Tang Dynasty. At the beginning of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, businessmen from Henan, Hubei, Sichuan and other places took a fancy to the advantage of convenient water transportation here, so they came to Fenghuang Town to do business and Settled down. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, various commercial ports, shops and banks were all over the streets, and the market was prosperous. Fenghuang Town has gradually become an important commercial market town connecting the Yangtze River water system and the Yellow River water system south of the Qinling Mountains. It is known as the "Little Shanghai" of Zhashui. Mountain specialties from the north were transported here by horse caravans and manpower, and then transported along the Han River to Hankou via waterways. Silk and rice from the south of the Yangtze River were also transported by waterways, and then sent to Guanzhong via dry roads across the Qinling Mountains. However, after the 1930s, with the shrinkage of water transportation and the improvement of highway transportation, Fenghuang Ancient Town gradually lost its former prosperity and gradually disappeared into the mountains of the Qinling Mountains. Despite this, there are still many old workshops and old craftsmanships in Fenghuang Town and surrounding places, such as paper mills, blacksmith shops, silk weaving shops, etc. Many local people still retain vague traces of ancient times in their production and lifestyle.
Walking on the old streets of Fenghuang Town, you will clearly feel the difference between the buildings on the old streets and the folk houses in Guanzhong. From the appearance, it looks more like a Huizhou folk house, with white walls and blue tiles, decorations in the center and both sides of the ridge, with lotus or plum blossoms in the middle, and animal spines or dragon heads on both sides. Many houses have three entrances and three openings, with three courtyards rising one floor at a time. It rains a lot in southern Shaanxi, so the buildings here, like many buildings in the south, pay more attention to their drainage function. The layout of the courtyard is basically a patio with four sides sloping towards the center. There are hidden pipes in the patio to drain rainwater outside, which is called "four water returns to the hall". The roof is in a herringbone shape, and drip tiles are used in front of the eaves to prevent rainwater from spreading. The gable wall of the house is built from bottom to top, and a fire wall is built flush with the roof ridge to prevent the spread of fire in neighboring houses. In many old houses on Fenghuang Old Street, you can see the marks left by history. Under the beams and pillars of an old house, we even saw stone piers made of white marble, but the origin of them cannot be verified. The remaining slogans from the "Cultural Revolution" period on the walls of some old houses also bear witness to the ups and downs that Fenghuang Ancient Town went through in that era.
