The Department of Physics is a senior department in Shanxi University with a long history of development. As early as 192, in the early days after the establishment of Shanxi University, the physics subject was set up in the advanced department of Zhongzhai, the Physics Textbook was taught, and the physics laboratory was established. Science and engineering were established in 1911. In July 1935, the College of Science was established. In September 1936, the Department of Physics was officially opened in the Faculty of Science. In that year, 19 students were enrolled. After the "July 7th" Lugouqiao Incident in 1937, the school moved to Linfen. After the liberation of Taiyuan, the Science College of Shanxi University was rebuilt in September 1949. In 1951, a specialized course in physics and chemistry was established. In 1953, colleges and universities were adjusted and Shanxi University was abolished. Shanxi Teachers College was established independently, and the School of Science was merged into the Teachers College, with specialized courses in physics and chemistry, a physics teaching and research group, a physics laboratory and more than 7 kinds of instruments and equipment purchased. Subsequently, actively create conditions to restart the preparation of the Department of Physics.

On September 1st, 1955, the Physics Department was established. * * * There are 1 faculty members, including 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 7 teaching assistants and 1 teaching assistant. In that year, 52 junior college students were enrolled with a two-year academic system. Courses such as general physics are offered. In 1956, the number of teaching staff increased to 14, including 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 2 lecturers, 7 teaching assistants, 2 teaching assistants and 1 cadre. Continue to recruit 113 two-year junior college students. The number of students in school reached 165. In the same year, entrusted by the Provincial Department of Education, a short-term training course for middle school teachers was held. On September 1st, 1957, various conditions were ripe, and the Physics Department of Shanxi Normal University was formally established. In the same year, more than 1 undergraduates from Grade 57 were sent to Peking University and Nankai University for further study, so as to train teachers for the department. Another 12 people were transferred to the Institute of Physics of Shanxi Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences; In the future, some students will be transferred to work in advance. The remaining 2 people graduated on time.

The Provincial Department of Education entrusted the Department of Physics to build the Shanxi Teaching Instrument Factory, built a factory building, purchased machine tools and equipment, transferred workers, and started regular production. Shanxi Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences, relying on the Department of Physics, plans to build the Institute of Atomic Energy. On March 6, 1959, the Institute of Atomic Energy was formally established, and scientific research was carried out, and the electrostatic electron accelerator was successfully developed. Withdrawn from the physics department in 1961.

By the end of 195s, there were 79 faculty members and 538 students in the physics departments of the two universities. 29 college graduates have been trained for three sessions.

in p>1961, according to the central government's eight-character policy of "adjustment, consolidation, enrichment and improvement", the provincial party Committee decided to merge the newly-built Shanxi University with Shanxi Normal University and reorganize Shanxi University. On June 26th, a meeting on the merger of the two universities was held to announce the formal merger. At the same time, the physics departments of the two universities also merged. Then, the party and government leading bodies of the department were adjusted and the General Party Branch Committee of the Department of Physics was established. At the same time, among the teaching staff and students, Party branches, league branches and teaching trade unions have been established, equipped with full-time political cadres, and all the work has embarked on a formal path. Ideological and political work has also been continuously strengthened.

after the merger of the two universities, the scale of the physics department has expanded. Four teaching and research sections, namely theoretical physics, solid state physics, radio and general physics, have been established. At that time, there were 14 faculty members, including 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 4 lecturers and 68 teaching assistants. At that time, the teaching plan of the whole department was rigorous, the teaching order was good, the teacher structure was reasonable, the teacher level was high, the specialty setting was comprehensive, the teaching quality was good, the scientific research planning was advanced, the teacher training was formal, the party and government work groups were sound, the rules and regulations were perfect, the ideological quality was good and the political atmosphere was high. The whole department has seen a prosperous scene.

in may of the same year, the cultural revolution began, and all departments were forced to suspend classes and stop enrolling students.

on September 27th, 1968, the propaganda team of the workers' army entered the school.

On August 26th, 1969, the Physics Department set up a revolutionary leading group, consisting of 1 workers, teachers and students. On December 26th, all the teachers and students were prepared to evacuate and walked to Hexi Village, Xiyang County to take part in "team cleaning" and "one fight against three evils". A few teachers and workers stayed in the school and resumed the preparation of the physical factory. Students from Grade 61 to Grade 63 went to the military farm to exercise and were assigned jobs, while 126 students from Grade 64 and Grade 65 stayed at school.

In March 197, more than 1 teachers and cadres were transferred from Xiyang to school to expand the physics factory. In September, the faculty and staff of the whole department returned to school one after another to participate in labor and political studies in various workshops of the physics factory.

The first batch enrolled 68 students. The academic system is three years. There are three majors, namely physics, radio and optoelectronics. At the same time, the Optoelectronic Teaching and Research Section was established, and the basic laboratory of general physics and radio specialty was rebuilt.
