The steep Karakorum Mountain, with an average elevation of more than 4,500 meters, contains only 48% oxygen in the air, and the annual ice and snow period is as long as 10 months. A frontier defense regiment in Xinjiang Military Region is responsible for guarding hundreds of kilometers of frontier defense here all the year round. In order to ensure the health of officers and men, the regiment organizes officers and men to go up the mountain to change their defenses every year. At half past nine in the morning, the motorcade set off. When the motorcade entered Zepu County, 7 kilometers away, the small town was boiling. When the motorcade passed Pusha at the foot of Kunlun Mountain, the green color disappeared and the asphalt road disappeared. There is a dead camel on the roadside, and a group of black vultures pounced on it, and the cruel breath of Kunlun Mountain came to my face.

The yellow sand brought by the wheels filled the carriage with dust, and the soldiers had to wear masks and sunglasses. It took a whole year to climb the mountain, and all the companies made full preparations. Shenxianwan Company brought 50 chickens, 100 ducks and 10 geese. Instructor Huang told reporters that chickens and ducks will definitely die in a few months, but they can also add a little vitality to their posts.

On the dusty road, you can see some road maintenance workers wearing red vests from time to time. When they see military vehicles, they always wave enthusiastically. On the inaccessible Kunlun Mountain, a simple greeting can also make people excited for half a day.

After winding in the mountains for more than four hours, Kudi Daban arrived. Di Ku, the gateway to Kunlun Mountain, means "a cliff that monkeys can't climb" in Uighur. The road is extremely steep, dangerous rocks stand tall, and sometimes gravel falls. If you are not careful, you may be killed by a car.

But this time it's okay. After more than two hours of emergency repair, the road is clear again.

Mazadaban is 4,962 meters above sea level, which is more dangerous than Daban in Di Ku.

As the altitude rises, the reporter feels that his breathing is getting tighter and tighter, just like a bellows being yanked. Soldier Wang Ping's lips and nails turned purple: Manchu soldier Li Xianda had a terrible headache and pinched his temples with his thumb and forefinger. The motorcade arrived at Li Sanjun's camp, and the afterglow of the sunset dyed the surrounding snow-capped mountains red. After dinner, Huang, the instructor of Shenxianwan checkpoint, told the reporter an unfortunate news: one third of the chickens and ducks they brought died and suffered heavy losses.

In the dim light of the station building, Cao Yiwen, a soldier from Jinzhou, Liaoning Province, climbed on the bed and sketched the day. Starting from Lisanyingfang Station, the rescue team parted ways and went to different checkpoints. The reporter chose to go to the highest checkpoint-Shenxian Bay (5380 meters above sea level).

Here we are. Fairy Bay has finally arrived. The camp is embedded in the snow-capped mountains, and the gate reads "Karakorum Steel Column". 1982 was awarded the honorary title of Shenxian Bay by the Central Military Commission.

Opening the car door, the reporter carefully stepped on this sacred land, feeling like stepping on a cotton pile. Soldiers guarding the mountain welcomed their travel-stained comrades into the camp with gongs, drums, hugs and laughter.
