Sichuan Institute of Technology is located in Zigong City, Sichuan Province, which is well-known at home and abroad as the hometown of dinosaurs, the Millennium Salt City, and the Light City of Southern China. The school’s predecessor was the Southwest Branch of the original East China Institute of Chemical Technology (now East China University of Science and Technology) established in 1965. In 1979, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Institute of Chemical Technology was established based on the former Southwest Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology. In 1983, it was renamed Sichuan Institute of Light Chemical Engineering with the approval of the former State Education Commission. In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Institute of Light Chemical Technology merged with Zigong Normal College, Zigong College and Zigong Education College to form Sichuan Institute of Technology. In March 2008, Sichuan Institute of Technology received the "Excellent" rating from the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation.

The school currently has three campuses: Huidong, Yingpan and Huangling (Huidong campus consists of Huinan and Huibei campuses), covering an area of ??nearly 2,400 acres and a total construction area of ??nearly 650,000 square meters.
