Walter reservoir: the largest artificial lake and reservoir in the world

Walter Reservoir is the largest artificial lake in the world. Located on the volta river in Ghana, it was formed after the completion of Akosombo Dam in 1967. It is 900 kilometers long, 24 kilometers wide and 74 meters deep. It is 1.8 times that of Qinghai Lake, the largest lake in China (4,583 kilometers).

Walter Reservoir is one of the best freshwater fishing grounds in Africa, with a fishing capacity of over 40,000 tons, equivalent to 1/4 of Ghana's marine catch.

Shipping in the reservoir area is convenient, and ships can be traced back to tamari Port. The downstream of the dam plays an important role in irrigation efficiency, maintaining a steady flow of cubic meters per second throughout the year. 1977, an irrigation project was built 24 kilometers downstream of Akosombo to divert water to irrigate more than 3 million mu of wasteland in Accra Plain to ensure Ghana's food self-sufficiency. Of course, Walter Reservoir also has many shortcomings, but after all, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
