Why doesn't iphone3 send text messages with no expression?

I haven't used it for three generations. I jumped directly from 1 to the fourth generation. My four represents that I just need to press the 123 key of the keyboard and then press #+=, and a row of characters will come out. If not, it means that the third generation does not have this function.
