SMS immortal bird
For me, there is only one criterion for a movie, whether it moves me or not. Not because it is magnificent, not because it is highly sought after and ranks first at the box office, nor because it has spent unprecedented money and superb stunts. Everyone has their own standards. Usually, some good movies are suffocating and the entertainment value seems to be insufficient. Many people need to relax from movies. For me, the highest expectation for a movie is to be moved.
The depth and darkness of the prison, I think, are only superficial things that books and movies want to reflect. If I were to find the key words for the movie Redemption, I would use humanity, forbearance and hope.
When we breathe free air, sunshine and rain and dew are so common that we forget their value and preciousness. Many things in life can only be understood after they are lost, such as freedom, such as sunshine, such as a habit and dependent environment.
The first scene that moved me in Redemption was that Brooke, a faltering old prisoner, tried to kill another prisoner with a sharp knife. Almost all the audience shared my deep doubts until Andy and Rhett came to persuade him. Brooke came to say goodbye to him because a prisoner learned that Brooke was paroled and that he would be expelled from Shawshank prison. At a loss, Brooke tried to kill someone in order not to leave the prison. Brooke cried, they want to drive me away from here. I can only do this. This is the only way for me to stay. I was deeply moved when I saw old Brooke leave the prison crying and applying for parole. Prison is a place that normal people can't avoid, but for Brooke who has lived here for decades and most of his life, Shawshank prison has become his whole world. In The Shawshank Redemption, Brooke is the librarian of the prison library. For the strange world outside, Brooke is full of infinite fear. Brooke, 68, suffering from arthritis, hobbled out of Shawshank prison in a Polish suit and French shoes. He was arranged as a packer in a small hotel. It turns out that after living in prison for decades, a sick old man can't adapt to life outside prison at all. He often has nightmares and can't sleep. Brooke finally hanged herself in a small hotel. He wrote a letter to Andy. He said, I have no more fears and troubles. Seeing this scene, an endless sadness swept through me. Human nature is like a plant. Only when it is contained and distorted will it be found and paid attention to.
In the second scene, Tommy was summoned by the warden late at night and murdered. Tommy is a young prisoner who studies with Andy. Like many prisoners, he likes Andy. When he learned why Andy was in prison, he couldn't be calm, because he happened to be in the same cell as the man who really killed Andy's wife, and he heard the whole truth and process. When he told Andy all this, Andy lost control almost once after living in prison for more than ten years. Stephen King, the original author of the film, described it this way: Andy was thinking about the whole thing in despair in his mind, as if Tommy had a key in his hand, which just opened his inner cage, which was his self-confinement. It is not a man in the cage, but a tiger named "Hope". The key given by Tommy can open the cage and release the tiger of hope roaring in his mind.
I always thought forbearance was not despair. On the contrary, people who need to be forbearing are those who are full of hope and fire, such as Andy.
When the warden mistakenly asked Tommy, was he telling the truth? Is he willing to testify for Andy? Tommy hardly thought. He proudly replied, "Yes, I do. "Please give me this honor. Poor boy, he is too simple and kind. What was waiting for him was not a just court, but three cold shots. I was moved again and felt a great pain in my heart. Why does justice collide with evil, and justice is so fragile!
In the third scene, Andy finally knows that Tommy has been killed. The warden cut off Andy's only chance to clear his name in order to keep him in prison and launder money for himself. Looking at Andy who almost gave up in the brig, I almost mistakenly thought that maybe in a place like prison, what people need is not hope, but despair, and the pain will be much less. Because all the pain of disappointment is rooted in hope. If "Redemption" made me hold this view until the end of the whole movie, I don't think "Redemption" can be called the most classic inspirational movie even if it gets more Oscar nominations. Redemption is the most natural and classic film I have ever seen. Yes, I should talk about the third scene. Andy managed to escape from prison. The gadget he bought from Rhett 26 years ago is not only used for playing chess, but also has the endurance function given to it by Andy. Its real value is to open a passage from prison to freedom. For twenty-six years, he finally got over it and climbed a 500-yard sewage pipe, which was as long as five American football fields and lasted nearly half a mile.
In twenty years in prison, Andy's eyes never glazed over. He never let Shawshank's high wall imprison his mind. Freedom feels like an invisible coat on Andy. He has never been like other prisoners. At the end of the day, he collapsed and trudged back to his cell to face another endless night. He always walks briskly with his head held high, and then returns to his cell as if he were going home. In the four years after Tommy's incident, Andy suffered a huge blow. He became more silent, introspective and often thoughtful. But hope seems to be a lamp that blows out in the night wind, but it is an immortal lamp and an immortal bird. Andy whispered to Derek, "It's better to die than to die." It lets me know that Andy's hope is no stranger. It has grown up in Andy's body and mind, and it is firm and abnormal.
Rhett is the clue that runs through the whole story in Redemption, and the original work tells the whole Shawshank story from Rhett's perspective. Rhett is an important figure in Shawshank prison. He knows the prison and its rules. The most incredible thing is that he can buy almost anything for prisoners, including Andy's chisel and huge photos of Monroe and Garbo covering the escape passage. But I think the most important identity of the film Rhett is to interpret the word "friend". He is innocent to Andy, and Andy is innocent to him. Andy once told Rhett that if he got out of prison, he must go somewhere and get some things he left him. Rhett asked what it was, and we were very curious, but Andy didn't answer in the film.
Before Rhett really got out of prison, he continued the packing work that Brooke had done in the small hotel where he worked at Old Brooke. Facing the new life and new environment, he met the same problems as old Brooke, and Rhett couldn't adapt to the outside life. Every time he goes to the bathroom, he always reports loudly, which makes his boss embarrassed. He specifically reminded him that although he was still on parole, he didn't need to report to him when he went to the toilet. So in the film, Rhett tells himself that he has been in Shawshank prison for more than 50 years. If he doesn't report it, he won't dare to pull it in the urine drop. Now he can hardly urinate without reporting to the toilet.
I believe Rhett, like old Brooke, feels that he is not needed and abandoned by society. Rhett almost gave up. What should he give up? Maybe it is hard-won freedom, maybe it is life. But in the end, the difference between Rhett and Brooke is that he promised Andy what he left him.
When Rhett finally came to the place that Andy told him, he found an iron box. There was nothing valuable in it, only a short message and some money enough for a trip. Andy sends Rhett to the Pacific Island to find him. He told Rhett that he needed a partner, and he really hoped that Rhett would cross the border and appear beside him.
It is lucky to have a friend like Andy. He knows his friends, knows what they need most, and can help each other silently. For Rhett now, he really needs a friend and a vision and hope for a new life. Andy only gave an invitation, but for Rhett, this invitation is all he needs.
The scene of this film is set on an island in the Pacific Ocean. Red successfully crossed the border, where he met Andy, who was coloring an old boat. The two old friends finally meet again, and there is no need for further explanation in the future.
